Homerun!

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate at Sweet Dewey’s BBQ in Boca Raton. Wanna- talk hole in the wall! Sweet Dewey’s which opened maybe a month ago- is something like 1,000 sq. feet- seats maybe 30 combined inside tables/handful of outside tables! This joint is so-small, that the layout doesn’t even allow for a soda dispenser…but don’t worry- its got plenty of canned sodas and bottled beers to wash down its reasonably priced food.

Sweet Dewey’s is the brainchild of Chef Dwayne Hooper and shopping center Landlord- Brian Bernstein…who correctly figured that Boca Raton needed a dynamite bbq joint-featuring the culinary skills of Hooper who previously tended shop at Saint Andrews Country Club, Polo Country Club and La Vielle Maison all in Boca Raton.

Trust Jeff Eats when I tell you that Sweet Dewey’s is a home run! Guaranteed-when word starts to spread about how good this joint’s food is- the eat-in/take-out lines are gonna be huge!

Rather then beating around the bush…the turkey chili, beef brisket, St. Louis bbq ribs, bbq chicken, cedar plank salmon, mac & cheese, corn bread, pecan pie absolutely blew Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats away!

You regular Jeff Eats’ readers know (or should know) that I’m not really a big-fan of smoked bbq stuff…that said, this guy Chef Dewey (in my book)- has this smoking thing down to a fine science- for sure the stuff is smoked, but “perfectly” done- if that makes sense to you! Every smoked item, was done just right-and not one thing came even close to being too smokey tasting.

Look! I could tell you as to- how the meat literally fell off the bbq bones…or that the homemade hot pecan pie was off the chart…or that the turkey chili had a great little kick to it…or that Sweet Dewey’s makes its own bbq sauce/has 5 flavors/and that Dewey’s Original BBQ Sauce kills, but I won’t… BUT- I will tell you, that Sweet Dewey’s is playing at a whole ‘nother level than 96.7% of the bbq joints that you probably- frequent down here in South Florida.

Anyway,

If you want to eat dynamite top quality bbq…you can check Sweet Dewey’s BBQ menu/prices/other info at sweetdeweysbbq.com.

The joint is open 7 days a week 11:30am-9pm…and if you wear anything but your tee shirt/shorts/flip flop ensemble, you’re gonna be over-dressed!

Bamboo Wok, Sweet Dewey’s two terrific restaurants right next door to each other. Stallone’s the third restaurant in the line is lousy.

Nice meeting you and Mrs. Jeff Eats at Dewey’s last night. The beef ribs, baby backs ribs, mac & cheese and French fries I took out were excellent. Definitely the best bbq Ive had in Boca in the 22 years I’ve lived here. I used a coupon to save a few bucks but the menu prices are in line with what other bbq restaurants in the area get. Personally, the quality of the food appears to be much better than what I normally see around.

    Jeff,
You got us there last night.
Amazing is all I can say.
Baby backs and brisket to die for.
    What a great find.

Very impressed with baby back ribs and beef ribs. Didn’t think too much of beef brisket. It was okay but was too much like a pot roast all mushy. On the sides, FF nothing to write home about. Loved the mac & cheese and corn bread.
All in all very good bbq place.

I like Reds Backwoods BBQ in Boca

Dewey’s is heads and shoulders above local competitors Shorty ‘s, Park Avenue, Mississippi Sweets and Rock n Roll.
Better quality of food being used.

You nailed it the quality of Dewey’s food is way above the other named bbq joints. Dewey is using top quality meats and ingredients. What seems a bit pricey really isn’t because the food is superior to what other bbq joints in Boca are selling. Hopefully people appreciate exactly what they are paying for.

    Jeff,
    Took out last night.
Baby backs and beef ribs were excellent.
The big problem I see here is that the food is way too expensive. This could be a huge problem for a small takeout. You can eat in Houston’s for less.

Well, here’s the deal with Sweet Deweys BBQ, I loved loved loved the food!

Unfortunately, The food might be sweet, but the service is sour.  So poor in fact that the really great food won’t be enough to get me to go back.

I won’t bore you with the details, we have all been mistreated by unsupervised kids left to represent a new business, and this was just another example.

I was on the fence about how many stars to give here, and based soley on the food I would have rated it four stars.  However, if you want me to spend my hard earned money at your restaraunt, make sure I am not treated like a red headed step child when I’m there.

What a shame, this place has potential, but the front of the house could make getting this new bbq spot on its feet an uphill battle.

I hope they fix the poor customer service, but I won’t be back to find out.

    Sorry Dewey…

My wife and I ate at Sweet Dewey’s.
    The food is excellent.
The layout is way too cramped for what it is trying to accomplish.
There are only a handful of tables.
No question the food is of excellent quality. The problem as I see it is that for a small joint the pricing is much too high for the experience you get when you eat there.
I know that Sweet Dewey’s is a new venture, so I am willing to see if they get things better organized and adjust the pricing to be more in line for what you get.

  10. Jeff,
My husband and I really enjoy good bbq.
Last week we took out from Sweet Dewey’s and really enjoyed the babybacks and roast chicken. Yesterday we took out babybacks and chicken from Shorty’s also in Boca. Is Shorty’s better than Dewey’s, no way. But the prices at Shorty’s makes it doable on a steady basis while Dewey’s is priced too high to do it on too steady of a basis. Takeout shouldn’t be all that expensive and Dewey’s is too expensive.

  11. I live in St. Andrews Country Club.
Dewey was a chef there for many years.
    His food was always excellent.
Dewey only knows how to cook one way. He uses top meats, fishes, poultry and other ingredients.
When compared to the Shorty’s, Red’s etc in the area Dewey’s prices look way high.
The reason he iis using top food to make his food while the others are using low grade food to make theirs.
That’s the story in a nutshell on pricing.
As for size of the store etc. when you eat in a little hole in the world you expect to pay little hole in the wall prices. That’s not the case at Dewey’s. That means that there is a big disconnect when people find that the food is not on the cheap.
I took food out and loved everything and found the prices reasonable.
But I do appreciate what others here are saying about prices etc.

Liked the meats. Thought sides were lousy.

  13. Steve says...

Hate to disagree with all of you, but wife & I had an unsatisfactory experience @ Sweet Dewey’s. The service was really bad. It was busy, and you had to hunt down somebody to take your name. Then, when a table became available, they left it unused for a long time while all the waiting customers were wondering what the hell was going on. Still worse, we did not like the food. We asked for our baby backs and beef ribs to be served with no sauce on them, planning to try the 5 different flavored sauces that they have. Well, after a very long wait, both dishes were brought swimming in their standard BBQ sauce. The baby backs were mediocre & the beef ribs were so tough as to be inedible. Our sides: fries, sweet potato fries, 1/3 ear of corn, & corn bread were all ordinary to poor. Sweet Dewey’s might improve, but we think they need serious remedial help. We won’t return anytime soon.

Did takeout last night. Was hopeful but was very disapointed.St. Louis ribs were totally charred. What little meat was left was rock hard. Brisket was tasteless. Chef Dewey nowhere in sight. Quality control a big issue here. I could have gotten much better ribs at Winn=Dixie at half the price.

  15. Doctor Minor says...

    Jeff,
Dewey’s better get its act together really fast because the bbq beef ribs I had the other day were a disaster. Very poorly run takeout.

  16. Barry Horowitz says...

Had their bbq beef ribs with ff and mac& cheese and loved the food. They just got a smoker which is behind the store and the flavor was excellent.
