1st Street Deli (Coconut Creek)

imageimage

***** 1st Street Deli, 5550 Northwest 40th Street, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 977-6700.

The 1st Street Deli is located inside the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in Coconut Creek. Great looking joint, with table/booth/counter seating…looks like a NYC “kosher style” deli circa 1960…in addition, part of the “store” has an- The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company outlet (check Jeff Eats 8/11/09 review for Delray Beach location).

Just so you know, Jeff Eats always treats casino “restaurants” with a jaundiced eye…is the food any good? are the prices outrageous? is this just a tourist trap?

Got some good news for you on 1st Street Deli…

Tried 1st Street Deli the other night for dinner…matzo ball soup (bowl-$4.95), potato pancake appetizer (3 pancakes $5.95), pastrami on rye (with french fries $12.95), salad trio (1-scoop each of chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad-$10.95), 8oz cheeseburger with french fries $11.95)—everything was A-OK! As a point of reference, I know a lot of you guys eat in Too Jay’s Gourmet Deli…the food at 1st Street Deli is better than Too Jay’s stuff (see Jeff Eats’ Too Jay’s review 3/28/09)…as a matter of fact, 1st Street Deli’s food is as good as the stuff served at most of the better bagel joints and New York Kosher Style Delis down here in sunny South Florida. For the record, although very good, 1st Street Deli’s food isn’t quite in the same league (although not by much) as TOP delis like the Pomperdale, Zinger’s or Ben’s (if you like, you can check Jeff Eats’ reviews for these 3 joints, if not, not!) On the pricing front, maybe a “drop” higher here and there-than your favorite bagel joint, but nothing that’s glaring…besides, if you spend the money on food, you won’t have to waste time “losing” it playing the slots—in any event, the Indians are gonna get the cash no matter how you slice it.

Check www.seminolecoconutcreekcasino.com for menu/prices.

One final thought, if you checked my review on The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company you’d know that it makes some real-good bagels. That said, I think that a bakers dozen at the Casino’s location fetches something like 14 bucks—now that’s a rip-off. One other thing on The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company, the casino’s website says that the “bagel” store is open from 6am-11pm–but when I was there at 9:30pm it “appeared” to be closed and its bagel display bins were totally empty…not good!

1st Street Deli is open 7 days a week 11am-11pm.

Hey Jeff, did you look at this place closely? It is so dirty (floor and tables), the waiters cleaned off our table with a messy rag he had dropped on the floor. The employees are rushed and rude, they are always out of bagels and the food is not up to normal Brooklyn Bagel standards. This place sucks……

Just had a chance to read your comments.

The night I was there, the joint was spotless.

    The food was A-OK.

The waitress was as pleasant as could be.

Just so you know, I was there last Saturday night at around 9:30pm and The Original Water Bagel was sold out of bagels.

    Thanks for reading…

  3. Brad says...

Nasty place and very very dirty

  4. KREM KREM says...

I was there about two weeks ago and the restaurant looked clean and food was just fine.

  5. Rob Patterson says...

Personally I like the deli at Isles better, but this one got the job done. I had a brisket on rye with ff and I enjoyed it.

We sat down and didn’t get helped for about 10 minutes. We were planning on leaving, but finally ordered food and the waitress was extremely rude, looked drunk and very slow. We asked to speak with the manager to tell him what had happened and noticed how dirty the floor and counter was. The manager came by and sneezed on my husband! Just a disgusting example of a restaurant that should have never opened. We would go back if they were giving away free food and gold bars.

    Jeff:
I was in the casino about a month ago on a Saturday around 4pm. I happened to notice that the deli wasn’t very busy but then again it was 4pm. I also noticed that the bagel bins were near empty with not much of a selection. It would just seem to me that if the bagel business stays open to 11pm there should have been bagels out on display.

  8. Mr. Stinker says...

Problem with this casino is that it stinks from smoke.
This deli is right in the middle of that smell.
I wouldn’t set foot in this casino.

Pomperdale ain’t what it used to be. Plus my yelp comment saying this was deleted which has never happened to me before. Can owners delete comments? My language was not abusive.

A friend had two yelp comments deleted. They were not about Pomperdale

  10. Ate lunch there yesterday.
Pastrami on rye and ff were delicious.

My wife and I ate there last night. A pastrami and a Ruben with one soda tax and tip 35 bucks. Food was ok but bit pricey don’t you think?

  13. Len Krause says...

    Jeff,
After watching the Burlesque Show at the Casino last night, my wife and I went to the deli. We got there about 10:30pm. The restaurant wasn’t very busy. The hostess looked totally bored and didn’t even greet us with a smile. All she said was “Follow me.”
I had a burger and my wife had a corned beef sandwich. The food is decent enough but nothing special.
The service was okay but also bordered on boredom. The restaurant doesn’t give off a welcoming feeling.
By the way the deli looks great but is definitely missing something.
The prices are on the high side.
If we hadnt gone to the show we definitely wouldnt make a special trip to eat at this deli.

  14. RRFD says...

    Ate there last week.
    Turkey rueben was delicious.
    Nice sized sandwich.
    Nice looking place.

  15. Harry says...

This place is one of the best in South Florida. I’ve been there maybe six times now and I’ve never had a bad experience. Looks clean as could be every time. Casinos have more money than they know what to do with, therefore their restaurants will never have issues like some of these comments suggest.

  16. swisher says...

    absolute garbage.
    food stinks.

  17. WWR says...

If this deli wasn’t inside a busy casino and was outside on the street it would be out of business. The food isn’t very good.

  18. KLS says...

    Good food. Gigantic portions.
    Reasonable prices.

  19. Jeff In Boca says...

    ok food, not great.

  20. Sid L. Turner says...

    food is ok.
    big portions.

  21. Victoria C. says...

Ate there Friday night and it was a horrible experience. $4 for a small cup of below par chili and they served us a spoiled tuna salad sandwich, replaced it with a ham and cheese. The ham was cheap, the kind in the plastic package next to the bologna in a supermarket. But they charged $13.95 for that gross ham and cheese. Waitress had an attitude. Lose lose all around. Never eat there again! Fail!

  22. XDCD says...

jeff, they took down the water bagel name and have plenty of bagles now around the clock.

  23. HG (Boca Raton) says...

Jeff, ate there last Friday night and really enjoyed it. my wife and I shared a house salad which was huge and I had sliders and she had a turkey ruben.

  24. LouW says...

Like the food and it’s priced right.

  25. BUCHNER says...

    Jeff,
My wife and I enjoy the Seminole Casino. We have eaten in 1st four times and the food has always been very good and reasonably priced. The wait staff has also been very good. The only negative is that the front of the house hostesses aren’t too polished or professional. Mgt. should work on that part.

  26. Steve G says...

    Good food and good service.
My wife and I are pretty steady at Seminole and catch lunch or dinner quite frequently.

  27. Lynn Golden says...

Ate there with my husband for first time this evening. Delicious burger sliders, turkey on rye, French fries, cole slaw. Prices were right as was the service.

  28. Lou Adler says...

    Jeff,
I eat dinner there at least once a month. The food is consistently good. They make delicious deli sandwiches and they give you plenty of food for your money. The staff is very good and the restaurant is great looking.

  29. Slip Handy says...

    Jeff.
You are right, the food is very good. You are also right that it’s a very close call with Ben’s, Zinger’s and Pomperdale. I am in the casino at least 2x a month and use my Player’s Points to pay for my food. Nice perk.

  30. Jeff D says...

Had a corned beef on rye w ff last night. Delicious.

  31. Ben Klein says...

My wife and I have been eating here since it first opened.

The food is basically hit or miss. Sometimes its good and sometimes its lousy.

For example last night night my pastrami on rye was lousy, but my french fries were hot and delicious delicious. My wife’s turkey rueben was delicious but her sweet potato fries were ice cold.
