Copper Canyon Grill (Boca Raton)

Posted on September 12th, 2009 · American Boca Raton

Copper Canyon Grill, 2006 Northwest Executive Center Circle, Boca Raton, Florida 33431 (561) 893-8838.

Just had dinner in a brand-new “American-style” joint…Copper Canyon Grill located in Boca Raton. The joint has been open something like 1- week.

The best way to describe Copper Canyon…it sort of looks like Houston’s, J. Alexander’s and J. Mark’s. If you check Copper Canyon’s website www.ccgrill.com you will find menu/photos which will give you some idea as to what the joint is all about.

A moment ago I said that Copper Canyon “sort of looks like…” well that’s where the comparison ends. Houston’s, J. Alexander’s, J. Mark’s all have good-food…sorry to report, Copper’s food isn’t very good.

A taste test of…bbq ribs, rotisserie chicken, prime rib burger ( meat burger topped with sliced prime rib)—found everything and I do mean everything OVER SALTED BEYOND BELIEF…the same went for the french fries, green beans and broccolino sides. Amazingly, even when the dishes were sent back, they “returned” seemingly-more salty than the first time out. Gunga Din would have made a fortune working this joint.

Now let’s talk prices…1-iced-coffee, 1-beer, 2 house salads, 1 bbq ribs entree, 1 rotisserie chicken (white meat only) entree, 1 rotisserie chicken/bbq ribs combo entree, 1 prime rib burger…$140 (tax and tip included). What a waste of money! Waaay Overpriced!…not to mention, the food stunk…let’s not even mention, that there is no bread basket to “get you started.”

Now let’s talk service…the joint is only 1-week old, so being a fair minded guy, let’s just say that it was “OK”…if the service “is” the same 3-4 weeks from now…that “OK”-goes to stinks.

If the guys who own this joint really think that they can compete with Houston’s, J. Alexander’s, J. Mark’s or for that matter The Cheesecake Factory in the S. Florida market, I got a– bridge in Brooklyn that I want to sell them.

Copper Canyon is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Let’s make this one-simple…Jeff Eats won’t be back for a second go-round.

  1. Very busy this past Friday night. We waited for something like 20 minutes before getting a table for four. The restaurant looks like Houstons and was extremely noisey. The ceiling are very low. Like you we found the food to be severely lacking. There is no bread basket. The corn bread which came with the house salad crumbled to the touch. We found every dish overseasoned. The prices are far from reasonable. After the newness wears off this restaurant is going to be hurting. There are so many better restaurants to choose from in the area.

Great looking restaurant and terrific location. I can’t wait to buy it in 2 months when they are out of business.

  3. AR says...

    Jeff Eats,
I and a group of friends also had dinner had Copper last night.
The restaurant is very Houston looking. The food is not the best and like you we found the bbq chicken which is advertised as being one of their specialities to be salty.
This restaurant’s prices are too expensive for what you get. My husband had the burger/sliced prime rib which is $13 and when it first came out the sliced prime rib wasn’t there. The whole dish was salty and the side of fries and green beans were also salty.
All of us also commented that there was no bread or rolls on the table.
This restaurant will be lucky to survive.

  4. sd says...

hi jeff, two couples last friday for dinner.
    nice looking Houstonish.
    food is okay nothing great.
three of us had bbq chicken and the other had chicken pot pie. everything was a bit overseasoned.
going againt houston’s, seasons 52, cheesecake, j alexanders which are all basically next door, copper is the lowest on the totem poll.
    prices on the high side.
the owners better straighten this restaurant out fast.

  5. sheryl l. says...

How in the world is this going to survive when you can eat a similar but good tasting meal at J. Mark’s for probably $85 rather than $140 you got burned for? Maybe these guys can fool the folks up in Orlando where they have another location but Boca isn’t going to fall for this one.
Once the new novelty of this wears off, TROUBLE.

  6. Lisa says...

restaurant was very busy the other night. It is their first week in business, so it is tough to criticize service- but our was pretty good. I have grown tired of the same bland stuff at Houstons, and actually found the prices here to be lower than either them or J. Alexanders. Chicken was tasty, and spinach dip was one of the best I ever had. I will go back.

  7. Jeff says...

Beautiful restaurant in a great setting. Everything our part of 4 had was excellent, especially the crab cakes. I agree with Lisa, the prices are competetive with all of your favorites. Seems you were giving them the business!

  8. bocadiner says...

I’ve been there twice now and find that it’s a great addition to the Boca restaurant landscape. I find the food to be “zesty” not too salty at all. And while the atmosphere and price are similar to Houston’s, the menu offers much more variety. The crab cakes are the best I’ve had and the chicken is really good as well. It’s also quite kid friendly. It will do well here.

  9. Jim F. says...

Jeff: Been reading the comments. My wife and I ate at Copper on Friday night. Anyone who can honestly say that the food is good doesn’t know anything about decent food and restaurants.
First, there is no bread for the table.
Second, the menu is rather limited.
Third, the ceiling are extremely low making the restaurant very noisey.
Fourth, the bbq chicken and bbq ribs were highly seasoned. The FF were salty.
Fifth, With only water and no desserts, it cost us for 2 entrees and 2 house salads almost $67.

I suspect that the positive comments are from the owners themselves, because no one in their right mind would say that the food is good and that the prices are reasonable.

  10. Margaret says...

I took my family of 5 there on Thursday night and with 5 (non alcoholic) drinks, 5 entrees, and one shared dessert it was $89. Very reasonable and we all loved it. The chicken may be the best I’ve ever had, and my husband said the same about the ribs. The staff was very attentive and friendly, and it was a great night all the way around. I am not the owner, by the way! Just had a great experience and wanted to share!

  11. wk says...

In Maryland same owners have another place called Red Rock. Ate there twice, same MO, SALTY. Never again.

  12. SouthOcean says...

Hey, Jeff — what happened to all the comments here? Somebody has deleted about a half dozen or so. Is this the remnant of the old “Jeff Eats” computer crash?

Or, did the restaurant get cranky about the drubbing they were getting?

  13. JeffEats says...

SouthOcean: Just had a chance to read your post.

Nothing sinister here, I just pushed the “delete” button by accident. That’s the story. My error.

    Thanks for reading…

Copper Canyon’s food is horrendous. My wife and I had house salads, burger and chicken. Don’t let anyone here tell you that the food isn’t salty because it was. Why in the world anyone would salt food like this is beyond comprehension. Stay away.

  15. Susie says...

Was not impressed at all. In fact, during the meal we kept remarking that the chicken, mashed potatoes and corn bread are so much better at Boston Market if that’s what you’re in the mood for. Service was not great, but most importantly the food could not hold a candle to Houston, J Alexander’s, Cheesecake, or J Marks. I sure wish J Marks had expanded into that space.

Any poster who really thinks that the food is any good either works for the restaurant, owns the restaurant or has no idea what decent good tasting fairly priced food is all about.
Friends and I ate there this past Saturday night and the prices and service are in the same range as Houstons which is right next door. The only difference is the food is not very good.
The only way to find out for sure is to try it for yourself.

jeff eats, talk around Woodfield Country Club right down the road from Copper is that it’s not very good. This morning just listening to a group talking, heard negatives on Copper, positive on Augy’s, negative on GOL, positive on Gramercy, positive on Pastrami Queen, negative on Original Brooklyn Water. Just gossip but these folks eat out quite abit.

after reading your report-i should have taken the advice not to go to Cooper Canyon.drinks were bad-wow ,after 3x send back of a gingerale wich the management could not handle it,my friend settled fo water.my wife ordered a cosmopolitan the glass was only little more than half filled it was flat and iced down , my wife send it back to change to not so much better one-beer OK.(BOTTLE HEINEKEN what can go wrong?)
appt.crabmeat dipp ,i could only taste the heavy cream, crabmeat with a mini -mini loaf of bread -should be better cut ,so you dont have to break it with the hands- if you like to share it-price ,think about it 11.95$
now-lets talk about the crabmeat cakes dish ,well-thanks that i wear eye glasses because i could hardly find the two little crabmeat (ice cream scoops)size among the overly sweet mountain heaved sliced carrots
did i ordered overly salted crabmeat scoops ,or a platter of carrots mounts.the mashed potatoes had a UFO BLOB in it -my wife bit on it – the manager responts (potato ROOT)all that for ONLY 25.95$ disgusting
i personally had a hamburger with a slice of roastbeef and over salted ,as well as MSG overkill out of this world green beans-management told us that they the use of MSG to prepare all the food by the way one of our friends is alergic to MSG-got sick
my two friends had the chicken dish -WHY only the breast of chicken?for that Price 17.50$ again potatoes and veggies to salty -HELLO is any one listening?one of the chicken dish was BBQ ribs added it was only two double rib cut -price 24.00$ total food & drink charge 125.00$ And please don”t ask me if whe would go BACK? noooooo

BTW, is a restaurant name La GRANJA, you can eat same food (chicken)for much less price

  21. Larry says...

I tried Copper when it first opened. I had their roast chciken which is supposedly their specialty. The first time it was drop salty but it was moist and I enjoyed it. Last night I was back to Copper and ordered the chicken and it was terrible. It literally was dried out. I asked for the manager and he came over to the table and told me that Copper was now making two types of roast chicken, one salty and the other not salty. He them went into some bs about why the chicken I had was so dry telling me that because there was very little salt it dried out. What he told me made no sense at all. All i know is that the chicken was crap. After last night, I won’t be back. This restaurant doesn’t have its act together. Jeff, you called it right upfront.

  22. Linda F. says...

Boca is really a small town. Holy mackrel word is really spreading about Copper and it isn’t good. A common thread in everything that I have read is that the food is salty. Maybe one person, maybe two but when more than mention the same thing I kind of think there maybe something to the story. We are going to stick with J. Mark’s and Houston’s. Thank you.

What a bunch of crap. Had the $25 ribs and the portion wasn’t big enough to feed a mouse. This place is a joke. Thought the fact that the food stunk and you got a big loser here. Hey Copper, go check out PA BBQ they have about 7 restaurants in the area. For about 15 bucks you get a full rack, garlic toast, 2 sides and the food is great. Stop fooling people.

  25. Eric says...

I read a handful of the commenst and 100% totally agree, the place is far from good. Was looking them up to make a complaint, then saw your sight. Yes the figure boca resturants are packed and they can steal from those resturants around them the people that don’t want to wait elsewhere. What they fail to realize is that people will only go once. The service was bad, the food just so so and the price was terrible. They will be out of business sson, but sadly I think we need another local good resturant, so they took the time to make the building nice, maybe overhead is what is what will kill them.

I just ate at Copper Canyon Grill with two friends. I think this restaurant should be renamed Salt Canyon Grill, because it is built upon the principles of salt, sea-salt, garlic-salt, onion-salt, and anything else in the salt family!

After eating half of our dishes, we felt as though our organs were shutting down because of the amount of salt overload that was coursing through out bodies. When asked if we wanted a box to take all the extra food home, two of us replied, NO THANKS. While the third took two ribs, momentarily thinking he would eat them at a later date…after then hearing from our third party member “I wouldn’t even feed this to my dog”.

Upon returning home, bulimia was a common thought between us as we could already feel the MSG’s deathly grip taking hold upon our bodies.

Please head this warning…and STAY AWAY!!

I have to say, I ate here for lunch for the first time. Beautiful interior similar to Houston’s, however, some restaurant owners in BOCA need to start caring less about appearances and more about quality! The food was extremely disappointing. I ordered the Silver Spur salad with rotisserie chicken yesterday and the waitress sold me on how it is their most popular salad and so tasty. Meanwhile, I got the salad which was supposed to have rotisserie chicken on it and blue cheese. There was maybe one ounce of shredded chicken on it and no cheese. My friend that came with even asked where my chicken was since there was barely any. And the salad cost a whopping $15.00 for lunch! I find it insulting that a restaurant chef would serve something so embarrassing and chintzy (to say the least) for that cost. Not to mention, I had a moldy tomato to boot. Again, be warned this restaurant is way over-priced and will not stand up to it’s competition like Houston’s or the Cheesecake Factory. I do not see it lasting too long if they don’t improve the quality which is most important.

Last Sat. night ate at Seasons 52 packed. Right next door Copper Canyon, half empty. Food stinks. Just a matter of time before it closes, imho.

  30. SW says...

Ate at Copper Canyon, once for lunch with co-workers and again for dinner with my husband and sister-in law. The food…pretty good, the service was good as well. Reading the reviews above…it just sounds like a few of the local restaurant owners/managers have tag teamed the facility… seriously…this kind of feedback from a guy that said Waterway cafe in PB was good…*sigh*

  31. km says...

went by the other night, seasons parking jammed, copper’s lot half empty. tell you something?

  32. RS says...

I went to copper canyon with some friends a couple days ago…the food with not good at all and way over priced…I would of had a better meal at McD’s….this place sucks they should rename it CRAPPY Caynon…

  33. John B. says...

Hey Jeff, YOU SURE DID CALL THIS ONE BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE.

In today’s Sun Sentinel food critic John Tanasychuk gave the joint 2-stars (fair). In part John wrote, “The Cowboy Ribeye Steak ($28) could have been so much better had it arrived at the table hot instead of luke warm. Wood-Fried Rotisserie Chicken ($17), a signature dish, was both dry and overly salted…Service: Amateurish.

I love that you call it as you see it, often before others.

  34. JeffEats says...

John B: Just had a chance to read your post.

I reviewed this joint back on 9/12/09. Like you said, I call it like I see it. Back them the food was OVER SALTED BEYOND BELIEF. It seems that things haven’t changed.

If you check, most of the negative comments here…seem to all mention how salty the food is. I will tell you, that when I was leaving, I mentioned to the GM how salty the food was and (the way I and my party took it) he couldn’t have cared less about the negative comment. In fact, he even told my wife, that if we came back 1- week later or even 3-weeks later the chicken would taste exactly the same because that’s the way Copper Canyon made it.

    Thanks for reading…

I have absolutely no axe to grind.
I am a Boca resident, having moved here from Brooklyn New York 21 years ago.
I have seen restaurants come and go in this town.
On the average,I would guess that I have eaten out at least twice a week during those years.
I have found that the Sun Sentinel oftens comes in on the high side when it reviews restaurants. My theory on that, is that it needs advertising and if it kills a restaurant it probably has killed off future ads.
For the Sun Sentinel to give Copper Canyon TWO STARS tells me that the critic thought it was a disaster.
I tried Copper Canyon around two weeks ago and found it to be lousy. Like others here I had its specialty which is chicken and it was very very salty.
This restaurant is in a great location.
I would bet that unless it changes its chef really fast that it will be out of business in the near future.

  36. Norm B. says...

Dinner last Sat. night. Chicken and ribs were overseasoned with salt. Won’t be back.

  37. This has to be one of the worst restaurants that I ever ate in. My wife and I pulled into the parking lot and commented to each other that it was strange that there were only a handful of cars there on a Friday night. Went into this great looking restaurant and had a disasterous meal. My salad had BONES in it. That’s right BONES in it. My wife’s chicken was served with a frozen center. We didn’t pay the bill, we just got up and walked out. What a crap hole. This restaurant has to fail. What a disaster.

  38. Phil says...

Bartenders are terrible, need more trainin
    prices are way over priced
    good luck
    will not make it here!!

  39. lk says...

Friends insisted on trying Copper. What a mistake. The food stinks. If you enjoy overseasoned, oversalted, lousy food then go, if not STAY AWAY.

    Thanks.

  40. Ed S. says...

    DISASTER!!!!
    Great location.
    That’s about it.
Will soon be out of business.
What a nerve selling this crap.

food was ok. chicken not salty. maybe they changed.

Over the Christmas Holiday the family and I tried Copper. We know this chain as we have eaten numerous times in its sister restauarnt in Maryland. Personally we found the food just fine. Give it another try.

  43. sw says...

This is a very poorly run restaurant. The servers are not very good. As for the food not good. The dishes we had were over seasoned. Not going to be around if it keeps this up.

  44. as says...

just got down here from LI for a couple of months. have heard nothing but terrible things about this one. boca is a small town and word sure does spread fast.

  45. jh says...

    food stinks.
better off going to houstons right next door.

  46. BS says...

Hey Jeff, met you last night at the Jamie King Colton Band’s cd release party at Copper Canyon. Jamie and his band were terrific and really ripped it up with some great new songs. That was the high point of the evening.
Kind of surprised that Copper Canyon didn’t serve any food or drink for the party.
My wife and I ordered two diet Cokes from a passing waitress. Never saw her or the sodas.
    What a piss poor operation.
Jamie saved the day, but Copper Canyon is a dump.

  47. Robin J. says...

Was at CC for Jamie King Colton. Great new songs.
Decided to eat at CC before and during performance.
I had chicken and my wife had a plain old cheeseburger.
Chicken was very seasoned. He said that the burger was ok.
CC is very dark and for some reason to me at least has a greasy feel.
CC isn’t going to last. You get much better food at Houstons and Seasons 52 which are in the same plaza.

  48. Nancy N says...

My son and I ate at the CC today and were very disappointed. My son ordered the grilled salmon, pot. and carrots and a glass of iced tea… I had the BBQ chicken sandwich, fries and a little cole slaw, and water. The bill came to $33.00…..the salmon was good, but very small and more like a lunch portion at a dinner price. My son said it was worth no more than $14.00, not $20.00… we will not be back. We both live in Boca.

  49. MARK B says...

The only word that I can think of to describe this restaurant is PATHETIC. The food is crappy. I had chicken breast on a salad and you’d swear that they took the chicken strips out of a package that they bought at Costco. The salad part tasted like a prepackaged salad that you get at Publix.

  50. CC says...

    This place is bad news.
    The food is not good.
    It is overpriced.
    The service stinks.
    The place is dirty.
