Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza (Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Delray Beach, Pompano Beach, Weston, Boca Raton, Palm Beach Gardens, Aventura, Plantation)

*****  Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza

Anthony’s is spreading like wildfire.  Its first location in Fort Lauderdale opened about 2 years ago and since then 8 other locations have dotted the South Florida landscape. Last night I ate at its newest location in Boca Raton which opened about a week ago. For right now, there are other spots in Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Delray Beach, Pompano Beach, Weston, Palm Beach Gardens, Aventura and Plantation.

Anthony’s is owned by the guy who owns Anthony’s Runway 84, which is a very well known “upscale” Italian joint in Fort Lauderdale.

Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza’s menu is simple…basically coal fired pizza, coal fired chicken wings and salad. Soda is sold by the bottle and there are full bars.

Last night’s dinner for 4 ran $55 (tax and tip included) and consisted of a large pizza (with toppings), large chicken platter, large salad and 3 bottles of soda. The pizza was good but not great. I found the sauce a “drop” on the bitter side. The chicken was excellent. The salad was excellent. I have eaten in the Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale (at least 5 times) and Pompano Beach joints and I will tell you, that they are spotless and the servers  are as professional as they come.

One quick observation, you would think that a joint that features the word “pizza” in its name, would have fabulous pizza-that’s not the case here. Anthony’s pizza is good but like I said 5 seconds ago, not great.

In recent years a number of these coal oven pizza joints have opened. Red Rock and CoalMine in Boca Raton and Vic & Angelo’s in Palm Beach Gardens immediatley come to mind. Apparently, the public likes this type of food and the price point.

Anthony’s is open for lunch and dinner. Guaranteed if there isn’t one currently near you, there soon will be.

I find it so funny that everyone in S. Florida clamors for this type of pizza. I guess everyone is just sick of the typical NY style pizza. I ate at Anthony’s last year and while the quality was good, I thought the pizza was no big whoop. Probably because I can get that type of pizza in London, ON. I’ll go for NY style any day over anthony’s because that pizza is non- existent around here. Btw, my spouse loves anthony’s wings. I came up with my own version and Robin said they were amazing.

Randi: I enjoy Anthony’s. That said, I think that the pizza at Red Rock’s (coal fired) located in Boca Raton is better. So, Anthony’s for chicken and salad, Red Rock for pizza.

I usually go to the Anthony’s location in Aventura. Personally, I’ve always loved brick-oven pizza like Lombardi’s in Manhattan and Nick’s in Queens, so Anthony’s is a homerun for me. Lately, I feel the quality of the pizza might be slipping, while the wings and the eggplant marino continue to be auperb. The pizza can be excellent, but I guess it depends who is making it. It must be hard to keep quality control over 8+ locations!

  4. Great pizza and chicken wings. Great place for families.

Nice ambiance. Good wings. Very sub-par meatball pizza.Too bad. It’s got everything going for itself except the pizza.

Ate in the Ft.Lauderdale one a while back. Pizza was just ok. Wings too. Also ate at the Runway 84… wonderful everything about that place. Wish there was a great pizza place in Boca/Delray area.

There are so many other better coal fired pizza places in Florida that it isn’t even funny. Tucci’s and Carolina’s come to mind. Anthony’s salads and chicken are very good. The pizza is heavy and really isn’t all that good.

We ate there yesterday. The prices have gone up. Small pizza with mushrooms and large chicken wings and one bottle of beer. Not quite $40 bucks. The pizza was burnt on the out side and not cooked enough on the inside. The sauce tasted under cooked. Small pizza came to about $16. and the wings about $18 for 20 wings. To just have wings and pizza in a very very noisy place was not appealing to me. They had tv sets on and loud rock music and the floors are tile and the noise just bounced all over the place. The service was excellent though. I think for $40 we could have gotten a nice pasta and salad at a restaurant that we didn’t have to shout to each other all night.

    Tried Anthony’s in Boca.
    House salad and wings delicious.
Pizza is okay but a bit too heavy tasting.
Roast beef with mozzarella on foccacia bread was delicious.

I think Anthony’s cheese pizza is disgusting. The sauce is bland and tasteless.
