Got a real good “mom & pop” Italian joint for you guys to check-out…Avellino’s Italian Restaurant in Delray Beach.

Just between you guys and me, I kinda think that I know my “mom & pop” Italian joints- and I’m telling you guys that Avellino’s in Delray Beach is a winner!

Real simple tale to tell…last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “discovered” Avellino’s and its food absolutely killed! Table/booth seating, reasonably priced appetizers/ salads/ hot & cold subs-panini/ salads/ pastas/ brick oven pizzas/ entrees/ other stuff dinner menu, lunch menu, twilight menu, super pleasant service…and yes- the joint’s dinner entrees come with soup or salad/ pasta side/ garlic rolls.

Let me wrap-up Avellino’s Italian Restaurant by telling you guys- that its brick-oven pizza alone was worth the price of admission. Other than for dough, cheese and tomato sauce I-got no idea as to what else (if anything) went into the the final product- All I can say – off the chart delicious!

You guys can check menu/prices/info at avellinosdelray.com.

The joint is open Monday-Saturday 11am-9pm, Sunday noon-9pm.

This one is for all you guys out there who like to follow Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats’ “social” calendar…

Just made dinner reservations to see Reminisce on Friday, August 13th, 2021. at the Pavilion Grille, 301 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, (561.912.0000).

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, I’ve seen Reminisce a number of times- and it’s definitely one of the best 50’s, 60’s, 70’s cover groups in South Florida. By the way, the Pavilion Grille is a gorgeous looking restaurant/ bar/ catering facility located in the atrium of an office building on Yamato Road in Boca Raton. Over the years, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have attended a number of “events” at the Pavilion and the joint’s American-Style menu definitely works!

This should be a real nice outing!

You can catch reservations/more info at paviliongrille.com and at (561) 912-0000.

By the way, if tomorrow night doesn’t work for you- here’s a copy of Reminisce’s current 2021-2022 schedule:

Laspada’s is a “sub-grinder-hoagie-heroes”!(or whatever you call them) joint. There are currently 3 South Florida locations…Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Davie and Coral Springs. The Lauderdale joint is the original location…I must have gotten stuff there at least 20 times…I have also been to the Coral Springs location twice…Never been to the Davie store.

The guys who own Laspada’s are “masters” at making phenomenal-fantastic hoagies. Take a look at Laspada’s website at www.laspadashoagies.com for menu/pricing…also take a look at the photos of the stores and sandwiches being made.

If you want to eat absolutely incredible stuff, then you absolutely want to get to a Laspada’s. The joints are open 7-days a week for lunch and dinner. Keep in mind, that there is very limited seating and the game is primarily takeout.

Three elderly men were relaxing on the beach in Florida.

One said “I owned a factory in New York state. One winter, the heat didn’t come on, the pipes froze and got water everywhere, and everything was ruined. I decided I was too old to start over, so I took the insurance money, sold the place, and retired to down here.”

The second man said “I had a big store, in Philadelphia. One night, it caught fire, and burned to the ground. I didn’t want to go through all the work of rebuilding, so I sold the property, took the insurance money, and moved here, too.”

The third man said “I owned a huge car dealership in Miami. Two years ago, a hurricane blew through, and destroyed everything, even the buildings. I, too, decided to take the insurance money, and retire.”

His companions looked at him in awe. After a few moments of silence, one asked “How did you start a hurricane??”

Got an absolutely terrific bagel joint for you guys to checkout- Maplewood Bagel Market in Jupiter.

Real simple tale to tell, yesterday- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “discovered” Maplewood Bagel Market and I gotta tell you that its stuff was/is absolutely off the chart delicious! Simple concept at work- order/pickup at the counter, nice handful of inside/outside tables, in house baked- bagels/muffins/cookies/pastries, salads, cream cheese spreads, hot & cold sandwiches, hot & cold beverages- reasonably priced menu.

Like I said a few seconds ago- absolutely off the chart delicious stuff! Now, you guys know that this food “reviewing gig” is purely a subjective thing- you know, what I like, you may hate and vice versa! With that in mind, I’m telling you that Maplewood Bagel Market’s bagels are right up there with the best- here in Florida! Let me wrap-up Maplewood Bagel Market by saying that if the joint was located a whole lot closer to Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats’ Boca Raton abode- we definitely would be real-steady customers!

Trust Jeff Eats on this one- Maplewood Bagel Market is an absolute must try!

Got this e-mail this morning…

Jeff,
It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife at Friday night’s Morris Day & The Time concert in Pompano Beach. Terrific show.
As I mentioned, my wife and I in late April retired to Deerfield Beach after living our 41 years of married life in Plainview, Long Island. We are just getting organized and as I told you we literally stumbled across your jeffeats.com site while looking for restaurants to eat in. Your taste in both food and entertainment match up pretty close with ours.
You have tons of picks and I was wondering if you could give us a great ‘mom & pop’ Italian joint in the Deerfield Beach area. As you may recall we are living around the Powerline/Sample Road area and we’re looking for that one pizza tee shorts/tee shirt joint to really count on.
Once again, great meeting you.
Joe K

Joe K:

Glad that you enjoyed Morris Day and the Time. It was a great show.

It was nice meeting you and your wife.

Real simple answer to your “request”…just by coincidence, last night- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate dinner at Nino’s Pizzeria in Boca Raton- and I gotta tell you, that this joint for the past 23 years has been one of our go-to-“mom & pops”…never and I repeat-never- a bad meal. Just between you and me, Nino’s makes a veal chop parmigiana and chicken cacciatore/chicken scarpariello both on the bone- that are off the chart. As for New York Style Pizza, the joint’s pies and slices are top-shelf!

Printed down below is a “review” that Jeff Eats did back on 5/19/14…try Nino’s- the bet here, you and your wife will absolutely love it!

Thanks for reading..

***** Nino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, 7120 Beracasa Way, Boca Raton, Florida 33433, (561) 392-9075.

Way back on March 20, 2008 Jeff Eats told you guys about Nino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Boca Raton.

Time for a little update on what is definitely one of the best “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joints in South Florida.

For your convenience the “original” story is printed below…gonna save you the trouble of scrolling around.

Anyway,

Just for background, Nino’s opened for business in Boca Raton in 1983-you mathematicians can do the math–for the rest of you-that’s 31 years ago. In something like 2005, it opened a second location in Delray Beach. Partners fall-out, one gets Boca Raton, the other gets Delray Beach. So now you know, the business angle here.

Now-just so we are straight, we are talking about Boca Raton- here. Absolutely-positively nothing wrong with the Delray Beach location–Jeff Eats (1) lives closer to the Boca joint and (2) Jeff Eats thinks that the food, service, ambiance are better in Boca Raton- but trust me Delray Beach ain’t exactly chopped liver either.

Anyway,

Jeff Eats has never “officially” counted the number of times-I’ve eaten in/taken out from Nino’s–but I’m guessing 70 maybe 80, let’s just say it’s a lot. I want to tell you, that not- even- one- time was the food not right on the money–same for the service. Real simple… its soups, salads, pizzas, calzones, subs, pastas, entrees are all delicious. Off the top of my head, I would match Nino’s veal chop parmigiana ($22 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls), its chicken cacciatore on the bone ($17.95 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls), its chicken scarpariello on the bone ($17.95 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls) and its shrimp scampi ($22.50 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls) up against South Florida’s best “mom & pop” and “upscale” players. While I’m on the subject of food, Nino’s plain pizza is always on the money and the joint makes what it calls an “upside down Sicilian” pie that is a work of beauty–if you go, get it!

You maybe wondering why the sudden “gushing” about Nino’s?

Last night, Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and some dear friends- ate dinner at Nino’s and we got to discussing “various” Italian joints–and like a bolt of lightening–it hit me as to how really good Nino’s stuff is! Just that simple! Real fast-right off the top of you head, other than Nino’s–name a “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint that does chicken cacciatore and chicken scarpariello on the bone…you do know, that’s the only RIGHT WAY to make those dishes–but that’s just my take-on the-thing!

You can check menu/prices at www.ninosofboca.com.

Nino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant is open 7 days a week 11am-10pm.
*****

***** Nino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, 7120 Beracasa Way, Boca Raton, Florida 33433, (561) 392-9075—&—13900 South Jog Road, Delray Beach, Florida 33445, (561) 499-3988

Nino’s is one of my favorite “mom and pop” Southern Italian joints in South Florida. I could be going out on a limb here, but I think that after you have tried this joint, you will also become a big fan.

Just so you know, the Boca Raton location has been around for something like 25 years…the Delray Beach location has been in business for about 3 years. Over the years, I have eaten in the Boca location something like 30 times and the Delray location twice…although the menus are almost identical, I like the food, ambiance and service in the Boca restaurant better…call me a creature of habit, but I really feel at home when I enter the Boca joint…from the way I am greeted at the front door, to Nino the owner waving and talking from behind the pizza counter to the customers…the food and service in Delray Beach is just fine, but there is something “special” about the Boca location.

Although Nino’s seemingly “follows” the standard pattern…Soup or salad, garlic rolls, entree with a pasta side…this joint makes some of the most delicious dishes and pizza that you have ever eaten. I would personally match its veal chop parmigiana—bone in chicken cacciatore— bone in chicken scapriello—shrimp scampi entrees against any Italian restaurant down here in South Florida.

Like I said before, Nino’s has been around for something like 25 years. The Boca Raton joint is jammed for dinner 7-days a week and has a takeout business that seems to be never ending. The Delray Beach spot has also developed quite a following…but my heart belongs to the Boca joint. Both joints are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Great food. Great service. Pizza joint prices…

By the way, Nino and his wife Josephine own Josephine’s Italian Restaurant which is located on Federal Highway in Boca Raton. That’s a story for another day…but Josephine’s is a very good “white table cloth” joint.

***** Howley’s Restaurant, 4700 South Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, Florida 33405, (561) 833-5691.

Got something really terrific for you guys…Howley’s Restaurant in West Palm Beach…for our purposes let’s call Howley’s a diner.

You know what “out of sight, out of mind” means? Sure you do…Well! Howley’s fits the bill…great- diner in West Palm Beach, which Boca Raton resident-Jeff Eats keeps forgetting about…just that simple…”out of sight, out of mind.”

Long story short…

Last night after dropping Son Jeff Eats off at Palm Beach International Airport- the combination of 2 wrong left turns followed by 3 wrong right turns and a fight with Mrs. Jeff Eats over my not being able to follow her instructions-we ended up right in front of Howley’s Restaurant. The joint looked exactly the same as when I first told you guys about it way back on June 17, 2008…making lemonade out of lemons-the crab-cakes that Mrs. Jeff Eats had and my bacon cheeseburger & French fries were delicious.

If you haven’t “yet” been to Howley’s…it’s an absolute must try…

Howley’s is open Sunday-Thursday 7am-2am, Friday-Saturday 8am-5am.

By the way, that June 17, 2008 write-up printed is down below.

June 17th, 2008 · American Breakfast West Palm Beach
***** Howley’s Restaurant, 4700 South Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, Florida 33405, (561) 833-5691.

One of my favorite South Florida joints to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at is Howley’s Restaurant which is on Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach.

This joint has been around since 1950…and is basically an old fashioned diner. Other than a flat screen tv here and there, you’ll swear that you are in a diner circa 1950. This joint doesn’t play the Johnny Rocket’s game. The decor is the real McCoy.

Howley’s does “everything.” Breakfast-lunch-dinner…In addition to a counter, there is booth and table seating. There is also an outdoor dining patio.

Just so you know, the guy who owns the famous Dada Restaurant located in Delray Beach bought Howley’s about 3 years ago…soooo the food is absolutely top-notch. This joint makes crab-cakes, the likes of which you have never tasted before.

Over the past few years, I probably have eaten in this joint 20 times. I absolutely love the atmosphere, the food and the hip-youngsters that comprise the wait-staff (no they don’t wear 1950’s costumes).

Howley’s prices are “all over the place.” There are all kinds of bargain specials, but some of the dishes are pretty pricey. Like I said before, this is a diner whose short-order-cooks were replaced by top-notch chefs.

This is a great place. If you look closely, you will see that Howley’s is right next door to a NO TELL MOTEL circa 1950. I sure wish Howley’s walls could talk.

Howley’s is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As for the crowd…tee shirts/shorts…tuxedos…suits…bikers…you name it.

Great place. Don’t miss it.

I don’t know about you guys- but, Jeff Eats any day of the week- would rather eat in an independently owned “mom & pop” diner rather than a large chain operation like IHOP or Perkins! For crying out loud, Memorial Day is this coming Monday!😛
