    Jeff, from Al
Smash burgers originated in the mid-1900s, with some sources pointing to the 1950s in the Midwest and others crediting the 1960s at the Dairy Cheer diner in Kentucky. The cooking method was also used earlier in the century, particularly during the Great Depression, as a way to stretch the meat by smashing it with inexpensive onions. The technique gained renewed mainstream popularity in the 2000s, largely due to chains like Smashburger, which was founded in 2007

    Great recommendation.
Awesome burgers, fries and onion rings.
My 2 teenage boys love this joint and actually believe that the smashed burger way of cooking is a relatively new concept. You hit the nail on the head, its has literally been around forever.

Every diner in America that has a flat top grill makes smashed burgers. Amazing how many people actually think that this method of cooking a hamburger is brand new.
