A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats…

I live in East Boca. About 3 weeks ago a new Italian restaurant, Pellegrino’s opened a few blocks from my apartment. There use to be a Pellegrino’s in Boca on Federal Highway which closed a few years ago. I never ate there, but heard from friends that it was really good. I’m thinking that the new restaurant is owned by the same people. Do you have any info on it?

Same guy!

Pellegrino’s Ristorante & Gourmet Market is the latest restaurant venture of Bobby Pellegrino.

I haven’t eaten there yet, but I will tell you- when Bobby Pellegrino runs a joint, you can expect absolutely dynamite food and service!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats got plans to check Pellegrino’s out sometime in early 2018- and I’ll follow with a “tale” about the joint after we’ve eaten there!

In the meantime, on the information-front, take a look at Jeff Eats’ 12/11/11 Pellegrino’s Ristorante story (North Federal Highway location) printed down below.

You can check menu/info at

Pellegrino’s Ristorante & Gourmet Market is open Monday-Thursday 4pm-10pm, Friday-Saturday 4pm-11pm, Sunday 4pm-9pm.

Thanks for reading…

Back on July 7, 2008 I did a “review” on a terrific Italian restaurant—Pellegrino’s Ristorante located in Deerfield. Here’s the original story…

Pellegrino’s Ristorante (Deerfield Beach)

***** Pellegrino’s Ristorante, 847 SE 8th Avenue, Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441 (954) 418-0611.

Pellegrino’s Ristorante is a white table cloth-hole in the wall Italian joint located in a non-descript Deerfield Beach strip shopping center. This is one of the best Italian Restaurants in South Florida, so make sure that your GPS system is working…so that you can find it.

Take a look at Pellegrino’s website at for menu details. Also take a look at the joint’s history and picture gallery. In the “history” you will find that Bobby Pellegrino (Pellegrino’s owner) is a nephew of the owners of Harlem’s world-famous Rao’s Restaurant. Folks who have eaten at Rao’s have told me that the Pellegrino’s and Rao’s food is very similar as is the total dining decor/ambiance. All I can tell you (having never eaten at Rao’s) is that Pellegrino’s sets the right mood, that being that you are eating at a family run NYC Italian joint circa 1950 by having an old juke box playing doo wop records when you enter the joint.

I have eaten in Pellegrino’s exactly 4 times. The food is absolutely terrific… delicious veal chop valdostano, veal parmigiana, shrimp scampi, zuppa di pesce.

Like I said before, this joint is a hole-in-the-wall, so you are going to need a reservation. As for pricing, this joint ain’t cheap…but “you get what you pay for.”

Pellegrino’s is open Tuesday-Sunday for dinner…closed on Monday.

Let me update this one for you guys.

Pellegrino’s which originally opened in Deerfield in 1999 closed in April, 2010. About a week ago-the joint re-opened finding a new home in Boca Raton. Last night, I gave the “Boca” Pellegrino’s a try. The only difference between the “versions” is locations and the fact that the Boca spot is a drop larger and has a nice sized outdoor patio for dining. The food like before- was delicious, the service was good, the prices are still a “drop” on the high side–but nothing that’s gonna kill anyone or chase you away. The old juke box wasn’t there, but Bobby Pellegrino assuerd me that in coming days it was going to be installed.

Let me sum this one up for you, Pellegrino’s is one of the best Italian restaurants in South Florida.

Like I said a few seconds ago, Pellegrino’s has only been open a week or so (as a matter of fact, its website is still basically under-construction)—for sure it’s got a few bugs to workout, but the bet here–there will soon be lines trying to get in.

Pellegrino’s is open Tuesday-Saturday for dinner, closed on Monday.

  1. Jeff,
Bobby Pellegrino is a nephew of the guys who own the world famous Rao’s in NYC. If you look at his uncles Bobby looks just like them.

In the 1999 Bobby opened a restaurant in a bombed out Deerfield Beach shopping center. It was a small joint and was always jammed with people in the know. Great food and a really cool NYC Little Italy vibe. As you wrote back then, not cheap, but not killer prices.

In the 2010 Bobby closed the Deerfield Beach joint and moved to Boca Raton. Bigger joint with an outdoor patio. Same great food but imho the joint lacked the cool NYC Little Italy vibe. The Boca joint closed a couple of years ago.

Bobby has now opened a new joint in Boca Raton. It’s bigger than #1 and #2 combined with an outdoor patio. The spot he took has been the home to at least 3 failed restaurants that I know of.

Only time will tell if the new Pellegrino’s makes it. What I do know is that based on Bobby’s track record the food and service will be terrific.

The Deerfield Beach joint was amazing.
The move to Boca Raton killed the joint’s coolness.
Both joints had great food but Boca Raton didn’t have the right ambiance.

  3. MKUH says...

I use to be a steady patron of pellegrino’s when it was in Deerfield. When it moved to Boca Raton it lost its NYC Wise Guy charm. The food was almost the same but something was missing. Really didn’t go there that often.

Looking forward to seeing what Bobby is now cooking.

  4. Kenny V says...

Bobby is going to have to go some to make it in his new location.

All within walking distance, Matteo’s, Trattoria Romana, Frank & Dino’s and Louie Bossi’s.

  5. Ellen G says...

    Hadn’t heard about this one.

    Looking forward to trying it.

  6. Andy Gold says...

    Out of business.
