    Jeff,
    I agree.
I saw his act a few years ago and the guy just isn’t funny.

    • Joyce Finer says...

He was so awful at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. He seemed to be on drugs, His jokes were crude and not funny. It was a total waste of money.

Unfunny Mandel Makes For A Humorless Series

    July 1, 1992|By TOM JICHA, TV/Radio Writer

Howie Mandel is personable, enthusiastic, hard working and a really nice guy offstage. He`s all you could want in a comedian but for one thing. He is not funny.

This is not a scattershot reaction to his four-week summer series on CBS, which premieres tonight and is pathetically non-funny. It is an opinion that began to be formed a decade ago, even before Mandel gained his greatest renown as a stand-up comic turned dramatic actor in St. Elsewhere.

During a National Cable Television Association convention in Las Vegas, Showtime bought out most of the big room at Caesar`s Palace for a performance by Diana Ross. A then-unknown Canadian comedian named Howie Mandel was the opening act for the former Supreme.

To say Mandel`s act was a bomb is to label Hiroshima an incident. The biggest laugh he got was when he whipped out “his handbag,“ an accessory case in the shape of a hand. As memory serves, this might have been the only laugh.

His high-energy act was greeted by almost total silence. It is only natural for an audience to grow impatient with a warmup act, especially when the headliner is of the caliber of Ross. In this instance, there was additional restlessness. Even from a distance, you could see this was a decent, earnest young man. It was painful to see everything he tried fail.

Mandel, of course, has had the last laugh. Thanks in part to his fame from St. Elsewhere, he has managed to sustain a thriving career in comedy, including several cable specials. Now a major network has given him a show of his own, even if it is one destined to last only a month.

Alas, he still has yet to do a really funny show.

Then again, maybe his brand of humor is a difficult to acquire taste. Perhaps there are people who find the notion of having the comedian`s elderly mother run face-first into a tree, take a header onto a concrete sidewalk and be run down by a car hilarious.

    Jeff,
Real pros in the business have known for years that Mandel really isn’t very funny.

I saw his standup act years ago and it was just silly. Not funny just silly. As a standup he was not good. Like you I like him as a judge on AGT.

  5. Young Court says...

Howie Mandel is a lousy standup comedian.
The man is pleasant on tv but on the live stage he tries to get laughs from stunts not jokes. He is very childish in his behavior and if you are an adult with any sense of humor you will be bored to death by his act.

  6. Sidney L Turner says...

Mandel is a nice pleasant personality on AGT.
Years ago I saw him in concert and he was horrendous.
He runs like a fool on th stage and is into sight gags to try and get laughs.
For a man so successful on tv he is a 100% dud when it comes to a live appearance.
Don’t waste your money going to see him.
Jeff has the call very right here.

  7. LODI says...

    Jeff,
I find Mandel on AGT to be very babyish.
He is pleasant enough but he really isn’t much of a judge. Now Howard Stern really calls it like it is.
Like others I have seen Mandel’s standup on tv and he stinks. Maybe for a 10 year old’s birthday party but not for any sensible adult.

  8. Scott says...

Ive seen Howie Mandel’s specials a few times, and he if far from funny, he is a very tacky man, with zero personality. I think AGT could survive without him, I’d rather watch Howard stern, Heidi Klum, and Mel B, save your money and time

  9. JEFF IN SUNRISE says...

Howie Mandel is one of the most overrated performer in show business.
His standup act is a disaster and an insult to the audience.
Buy these tickets and you are a fool.
