***** Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint ****

You know that I like to keep you guys-up to date on all kinds of stuff related to food and the food industry.

When you get a chance, check-out Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint

Real simple pizza-franchise concept…make your own pizzas. You go to the joint, there is a “huge” selection of pizza toppings etc.—the guy/gal behind the counter puts the pizza “together” for you–and it gets delivered to your table within something like 6 minutes.

Trust me on this one, you will soon see these “make your own” pizza joints popping up all over South Florida, not to mention all over the United States. They sort of remind me of the Yogurt by the ounce joints.

Uncle Maddio’s is just one player in this “new” business segment. There are a number of guys-getting into this business, including publiclly traded Pizza Inn.

For right now–as far as I know, there aren’t any Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joints in South Florida. Betcha a buck, that sometime within the next 6 months, a version-of-this-concept will be in your neighborhood.

Just thought you guys would enjoy hearing about what the food industry is cooking up for you.

jeff, hadnt heard about this concept. what do you think of it?

      Jake G.:

Just had a chance to read your post.

The bet here, a ton of these kinda stores are going to get built over the next 2 years. THEN, there are going to be a whole lot of unhappy franchisees as the stores start to fail.

      Thats’ what I think.

      Thanks for reading…

        I’m with you Jeff.
        Lots of stores coming.
Lots of stores will then be closing.

      • RRF says...

        I like the concept.
I agree with you that the problem will be overbuilding.
In the end there will be too many of them and then the fall.

  2. South Ocean says...

In 1994, Kramer, on the Seinfeld show, proposed the same idea — a “pizza business where you make your own pie.” It fails over a disagreement on whether cucumber is an appropriate pizza topping.

I can just see this idea percolating in Uncle Maddio’s head for the past 20 or so years!

Hey, I got a great idea. We could take ground meat, form it into a patty, and fry it on a flattop. Maybe serve it on some kind of bun . . .

  3. MARK says...

from the video it appears that they use conveyor belt oven to make the pizza. bet it tastes like crap.
    concept is doomed to failure.

  4. Steven Okun says...

I guess people are hungry for new franchise concepts.
    Think this one through.
How good could the pizza be in a restaurant that makes your personal pizza from scratch and gets it to you in 6 minutes?
    I wouldn’t think to good.
I once went to a Cicci’s Pizza and this type of fast food pizza is usually pretty lousy.
No question, loads of people are going to open these pizza joints but I agree with you, they won’t last long.

  5. frank w says...

    Terribly concept. Franchisees beware!

  6. David L says...

I think it’s a GREAT concept, but like Jeff says, everyone will be trying it. I can’t say that Uncle Maddio’s will be the one to become the household name or not, but if the prices are fare, and the restaurants are clean they should do well.

People don’t go to places like this for a taste of NY pizza, they go because it is something new to try and most likely kid-friendly. Kind of like California Pizza Kitchen…The pizza isn’t so good, but there are some interesting combinations to keep people going back…

    Tandoori Chicken Pizza anyone???

I am living in KY right now & we are having Papa Murphy’s Take N Bake pop up every where. You go in & they make the pizza in front of you & you take it home & bake it. They are pretty good. I would rather do that than have Pizza Hut, Domino’s or Papa Johns. Here is a link to their site. I bet you see a Papa Murphy’s in south Florida soon too.

  8. SHELDON says...

This is a bad news concept. Franchisees who get sucked in are going to lose their collective shirts. Just look at what a disaster CiCi’s Pizza is.
If you are thinking of buying into this concept, DONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Carl says...

I live in Atlanta and thought the same- quick serve pizza, how good can it be? However, I was very impressed at both the quality of the pizza and the price. I can take my wife and two children there, all have exactly what we want (no splitting pizzas anymore!) for around $30, and it’s much better and cheaper than other ‘local’ pizza places. We’ve been back many times and its become a staple in our dining rotation.

  10. CHUCK CHEESE says...

Jeff, I’m with you. FAD and it won’t last for long.

  11. Lenny G says...

I got a friend who bought some stock in Pizza Inns. He paid about $6 a share. He thinks that he is going to have a gold mine here. He tried to talk me into buying some. I passed. What do others think of the concept and PZZI in particular?

  12. Bonnie says...

make your own pizza is a dumb idea. it sounds cute but won’t work.

    • RONALD says...

i agree with you, dumb idea

Uncle Maddio’s is great fun for the whole family. We had a lot of fun there. By Gregg L. Friedman MD, Psychiatrist, Hallandale Beach, FL

    jeff, you spotted it.
late last month one of these self serve type pizza places YOUR PIE opened in Pompano.
they have a handful of stores in GA and a couple in Florida. this is the first one of this type ive seen in FLA but like you said they’ll roll them out just like yogurt stores.

  15. NUDGEY says...

Sun Sentinel did a nice story on YOUR PIE which opened in Lighthouse point about 2 weeks ago. Haven’t been there yet but plan on giving it a try.
Just a thought, if this concept works, why couldn’t a Subway just add a pizza oven and do the same thing?
