Ambrosia Restaurant (West Palm Beach)
***** Ambrosia Restaurant, 1603 South Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401, (561) 833-8280.
Got a really good “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint for you…Ambrosia Restaurant in West Palm Beach. The joint has been around since 1978, so I’m thinking that just maybe- it must be doing something right. A quick heads-up, I see that www.southfloridadines.com has one of those 10 gets you 20 “deals” going, so if that’s your game, play on. You can also check Ambrosia’s menu/prices/photos at the site.
The other evening, I did dinner at Ambrosia… A quick decor discussion, although it’s got the “requisite” Italian joint booth-table set-up, I found the artwork etc. more interesting than the usual boring maps/pictures/murals that seem to be standard fare for these type of joints…now don’t get me wrong, nothing fancy here, so your tee shirts/shorts/sneakers-flip flops-sandals work here.
Let me go out on a limb here…I’m gonna put Ambrosia Restaurant right up there with the “best” of breed. Look, like most of you guys, I’ve eaten in more “mom & pop” Italian joints than any normal waistline should be put through. To rank them 1-2-3-etc. would be a tough, if impossible chore. What I do know, is that most of them–get the job done, but aren’t anything really special…sort of like a dime a dozen. Trust me on this one, Ambrosia’s food…at least based on what I “tried” was much better than the South Florida norm.
Anyway…I thought that the veal parmigiana, veal marsala, chicken cacciatore, shrimp fra diavolo, penne ala vodka, pizza–were all delicious. By the way, Ambrosia’s prices are exactly what you’d expect and entrees come with salad/pasta side. Let me go further out on the limb here, the joint makes one of the “best” New York Style pizzas that I’ve had in South Florida…assuming, that my definition of a New York Slice is the same or similar to yours.
Ambrosia is like a breath of fresh air in the “mom & pop” red sauce Italian space…
Ambrosia is open Monday-Thursday 11:15am-10pm, Friday 11:15am-11pm, Saturday 5pm-10pm, Sunday 5pm-9pm.

Check out Cafe La Buca in Pompano. 5 tabes, no menu, all pastas fresh housemade, the pizza coming out of wood burning oven looked amazing
good call here.
the food here is excellent.
i love its penne a la vodka.
same goes for veal parm.
as for the pizza, one of the best that this queens boy has had.
I’m not sure how long ago you were here but I had a completely different experience.
I used to love eating here. But, the past few years things have changed and the past four times I’ve been there it was horrible. I think these guys have given up! Where to begin … there is a musty smell in both the bar and the main dining room … the carpet is filthy … the decor is tacky … the TV in the bar was annoyingly loud … the silverware appears to have come from an old school cafeteria, (my knife couldn’t cut a peice of chicken) … the food was well below average … the waiters acted like we were imposing on their time. I will not go back!
