Bistro Gastronomie (Boca Raton).

Let Jeff Eats do a “mitzvah” here…

To the owner of Bistro Gastronomie which is currently under construction at the intersection of Long Lake Boulevard and Yamato Road in Boca Raton…unless you are planning on washing money or something like that in the upscale French restaurant that you have been spending money like crazy on during the past 8 months or-so…stop everything right now and cut your losses.

Now this is just an opinion, but the demographics for the area tells-Jeff Eats that there is no way in hell that an upscale French restaurant in “your” location has any chance whatsoever of making it. The spot that you are building in ~originally housed a Moe’s Bagel joint and Back Street a moderately priced “American-Style” joint-that had 1-2-3-4 owners before finally calling it a day. Now! If “they” couldn’t move enough bagels/coffee or 4-sliders with French fries for $8.95 to pay the rent, then logic tells me -that your braised rabbit ain’t exactly gonna be flying off the shelf-either.

Sorry I didn’t get to you sooner, but I’ve been busy “studying” why the bay two doors down from yours has had something like six different businesses during the past 3-4 years.

Anyway…good luck!

UPDATE: January 13, 2014

This evening Jeff Eats received an e-mail from Bistro Gastronomie’s owner, William Walden. In addition the Jeff Eats’ site received a number of “Comments” from the same William Walden.

Suffice it to say, Mr. Walden believes that his new restaurant- scheduled to open in February is going to be an extremely successful endeavor.

Since Jeff Eats has no skin in-the Bistro Gastronomie game…how the restaurant fares is of no real concern to me.

Jeff Eats really does wish Bistro Gastronomie and Mr. Walden all the best…that said, Jeff Eats stands by his opinions expressed in my 12/13/2013 story.

Mr. Walden’s e-mail is printed below.
From: William Walden
Subject: Bistro Gastronomie
Message Body:
Hello Jeff and Happy New Year! Bistro Gastronomie is slated to open this coming
February. Hopefully you received one of our flyers in the mail this past week. I
just discovered your Blog from a colleague that emailed me the link. WOW. I hope
to get a chance to meet you in the coming weeks and I certainly hope that you
will try my restaurant. Noteworthy is that it has taken an extremely long time
to build out due to the extensive renovations. We plan on being here for years.
Until shortly, Thank you! Executive Chef/Owner William Walden–

WOW i dont think i have ever need so many mean negative people in one place. Its no wonder the economy is bad they say everything will fail so why even try. I for one am looking forward to the opening and will give it a try.

  2. CJW says...

Well I have to tell yeah… You people that have not given Bistro Gastronomie (BG) a chance you should be ashamed of yourselves. Those of you that had such negative comments should shut up ( even Jeff Mr. Eats ) who for his logo has a sub sandwich!!! Come on really?

I would like to say that you all should be happy that this wonderful restaurant is in your area. The interiors is out of this world and the food to die for. Some of you say it’s just French, it is not. It is American French ( Seabass, Rack of Lamb, Trout )etc. you need to read a menu. Prices are great even compared to other high end restaurants you have to travel to the east side for, pay for parking, fight the crowds, and not all that great. You don’t have to have all 4 or 5 course meal at BG. You can have a salad and an entre’, soup and entre’ or first course and dessert, just to experience BG. Yes I have eaten at BG the other night and it was unbelievable, loved the atmosphere, loved the service, and loved all that I had to eat. I had Peking Duck, apple walnut salad, sea bass and the soufflé …yummy. Will I go there once a week or month maybe not, but definitely 2 or 3 times a year. Totally worth it. I will be bringing my mother who turns 80 this year to eat at BG.

Some of you talk about the location, location does not matter if the service and food are great. I live in Lake Worth and traveled to BG, so you don’t have to live next door or half mile away to enjoy BG. I had to go to Miami or North Palm Beach or east Boca etc that are in what you people would call “great ” locations and some of them don’t even survive, so Location IS NOT proven to be a guarantee.

The worse thing about all of you negative people was that BG was not even open yet. What idiots comment on some thing they have never tried. It is like when my mother use to tell me about eating something ( vegetable as a kid ) for the first time how do you know it doesn’t taste good until you tried it….oh it’s because you HEARD it doesn’t taste good from little Johnny next door… Well I love my veggies and loved everything at BG end of story.
So, go enjoy your coupon places, same old food and same old boring atmosphere places.

    CJW.

Your arguments obviously didn’t hold up as Bistro is now out of business. Why would you open a bbq pork store in a Hasdic Jewish Neighborhood? You wouldn’t. Same thing here. This rest. Had no business opening where it did. Jeff Eats and others saw that, but many blind ones like you didn’t.

  3. Jacques Tati says...

Totally agree. Food is fantastic. Bistro Gastronomie is out of this world. Best in Boca. Decor beautiful. Jeff and his gang of miserable old NY/NJ losers are clearly happier at Ben’s Deli or one of those “real Noo Yoik” Chinese or Italian restaurants. Full of jealousy and hate. Sad old gits want it to fail so they can get another cheapo bagel place where they can sit around all day and complain about everything. lmao

    • Mr J Calhoun says...

I ate there last night and thought that the food was mediocre and overpriced.
I and my wife will definitely not be back for round two.

      • Fred Dread says...

What did you have for each course? How much did your total bill come to? How much did you pay for wine?

    • CortezJones says...

      Lmfao.
      Out of Business.

  4. Jacques Tati says...

    This is hysterical.

I’ve just read Jeff’s bio on this very site. He claims to be a food expert. lol

    This is what he admits:

“Just so you know, I don’t go for the fancy sit-down joints that want you to wear pants and a jacket, but rather places where a pair of shorts, an old tee shirt and a pair of sneakers is considered formal-wear. I don’t know one sauce from another.”

This explains why he trashed Bistro Gastronomie from the start.

Jeff seems to be just another Noo Yoik chancer after a free meal in exchange for publicity on this crappy website infested with old, white racist trash.

    • Grossman says...

You sound like an f-ing moron.
You are probably one of the owners or a good friend.
Jeff’s writeup concerned location and demographics. There is no review on the food. I also see where Jeff wishes the owners the best of luck.

What you probably don’t get or for that matter even see is that Jeff let you speak your mind on HIS site. For what it’s worth Jeff didn’t have to publish your comments at all. That alone tells anyone with a brain and that’s not you that Jeff calls it like he sees it and isn’t afraid to allow people who don’t agree with him to voice their opinions.

By the way I agree with Jeff that the location sucks and that this restaurant is in for a really rough ride.

Like Jeff I wish the owners only the best but if I was a betting man I wouldn’t bet with them.

Time will tell, but if and when this restaurant fails, I guarantee you anything that you won’t be back here saying Hey Jeff you called in right from day one.

    • ZED says...

      What a clown.
If Jeff wanted a free meal he wouldn’t have written as he did.
Jeff calls it like he sees it. End of story.

      • Fred Dread says...

This is hysterical. I have nothing whatsoever to do with Bistro Gastronomie, or its owner….or anyone else to do with the restaurant. I’m just incredulous at the bitter old people who inhabit this site and are behaving like a lynch mob since before the restaurant even opened. But looking at other “reviews” and comments on this site, it looks to me like the modus operandi is to employ bullying tactics and trash certain places, while lavishing praise on others. Knowing something of the kind of people who inhabit this site, it looks to me that what is happening here is that establishments that are buddies with the main protagonists on this site get good publicity (in exchange for special treatment). While restaurants that don’t want to have anything to do with the racket find themselves part of a witch hunt….

        • ZED says...

Fred Tati whatever the hell your name is. You repeat yourself quite a bit.

    • TURNER says...

This guy has to be tied to the owner.
This restaurant hasn’t got a prayer of making it.
If the owner was smart he should have invited Jeff to eat there as his guest. If the food is as terrific as some think, Jeff might have found the same and given a different prognosis for the place. but obviously the owner didn’t and it would seem that Jeff has now moved on to other restaurants and reviews.

    • Alan W says...

For just a customer you sure are worried a whole lot about what Jeff and others think about this restaurant. Something don’t sound tight here.

    • Gotti says...

      You are full of crap.
Tati you have posted 8 times here.
      Get lost.
You are connected to the restaurant.

Definitely got to be with the restaurant.

    • ZED says...

What the hell are you smoking?
I’ve been reading Jeff Eats for years and give or take a small handful most of the reviews are pretty positive.
In this review Jeff didn’t review the food. All he discussed was location and the demographics surrounding it.
He doesn’t think that an upscale restaurant works here.
      Nothing more and nothing less.
I get it. You can have an opinion but he can’t.
You are reading way too much into this review.
      Personally I agree with Jeff.
Now why don’t you go and eat at the restaurant because I don’t think it will be around for very long.

    • TeddyWeiss says...

      That’s post #9 for you.
      You phony.
If this site was so fixed as you allege Jeff wouldn’t have published your 9 comments.
You aren’t very bright, are you?

    • mr. rogers says...

don’t you know that everytime you and other click on this review it improves its rating on aol, yahoo, google search engines? just look this review is ahead of the restaurant’s own website. jeff’s got you outfoxed.

  8. Jacques Tati says...

TeddyWeiss, I suspect I’m WAY MORE intelligent than you, but that’s another story. Anyway, here is Jeff Eats bio, written by himself:

“I now consider myself to be a FOOD EXPERT… Just so you know, I don’t go for the fancy sit-down joints that want you to wear pants and a jacket, but rather places where a pair of shorts, an old tee shirt and a pair of sneakers is considered formal-wear. I don’t know one sauce from another. I also don’t know, or really care, how “dishes” are prepared.”

    SAYS IT ALL REALLY!!!!!!

How can you be a food expert…but not know one sauce from another.

This site is a racket for the kind of people who go to Ben’s Deli, complain about the food, and then get a freebie “else they will tell their buddies”.

No question in my mind that it’s the best everyday food blog in south Florida.
I see where you caught Fred Dread and Jacques Tati typing away on the same computer.
Based on that IP I now give this writer absolutely no credibility whatsoever.
To your credit, you seemingly publish every comment whether or not it is in agreement with you or pro/con Jeff Eats. That should tell people that you play it straight and are looking to hear all sides to a story.
Keep up the great site and I look forward to reading your next and future write-ups.

        M.S.I.

    • Jeff from boca says...

    • Sid L. Turner says...

I think that you are tied to the restaurant and that you are doing your best to convince people that it’s terrific. We now know that you have used at least 2 personas and maybe even more. So why would anyone listen to you when you have to try and inflate the number of people that you are?
      Jeff caught you.
      See Ya!

    Jeff
Was in the center at 8pm and looked at the restaurant. It looks great and very upscale. Through the window I saw maybe 50% of the seats filled in the main dining room and the bar and its booths totally empty. Outside there are valet parking signs with 2 guys waving to cars to park with them. In the 15 minutes or so I was there no one valet parked and no one came in or out of the restaurant. For sure the restaurant doesn’t fit with the other tenants like a pizza joint, Chinese takeout, dry cleaners, manicure place.
I have no idea if this Concept works here or not. Time will be the judged of that.

  12. Alice B says...

    Jeff,
Friends of mine/husband took us to Bistro last night for our anniversary. Very well appointed restaurant with excellent service. All four of us had price fixed dinners which included appetizer/salad/entrée/dessert. Roughly about $46- $52 a head for the lower priced dinners. My husband had duck and I had trout. Thought all in all the food was very good. We were treated to dinner and had a very nice time.
My thoughts are that the priced fixed menu wasn’t too expensive and actually fairly priced. Also, many people don’t want all of the courses, so you can order ala carte. The restaurant is very handsome. Not sure if this restaurant is in the right spot. Just off the top of my head I would think that maybe Mizner Park or Las Olas would have a better crowd for this upscale restaurant. As I said we enjoyed everything.

  13. rgr65 says...

Looked in the window and this joint looks great. The owners spent some cash building this one. Also looked at the menu and it doesn’t look overly expensive. Don’t know about how the food is as I havent eaten there.
I see that there was a really good lively discussion of the location. I live in Broken Sound CC which is 5 minutes away. Personally the upscale restaurant looks out of place in such a neighborhood tiny center. But that’s just my opinion. Looking forward to seeing how Bistro Gastronomie does.

  14. Mary says...

Try Bisto La Brouchette in Cooper City and compare………

  15. Linda67 says...

Literally I live right behind the restaurant.
    Looked at its menu.
    Too expensive for the area.
Have to agree that this restaurant doesn’t have a bright future.

  16. VF1944BRONX says...

I live in the Woodfield Country Club. We are located about 5 minutes away from the restaurant. My wife and I and another couple ate there last Saturday night. Rather than going into what we ate it will suffice that all four of found the food just passable and overpriced for what we got. The restaurant is very well appointed and the service was very good. We gave Bistro the shot that it has been asking for and we were not impressed. Most likely we will not be back for round 2. On a separate note, having been an investor in several restaurant businesses let me tell you that the location isn’t good. The surrounding area per capital isn’t strong for this restaurant’s price points. In addition the demographics don’t favor FRENCH food in their diets.
Best of luck to its owners.

  17. The only difference between Bistro and the Titanic is that the Titanic had a band.
Ate there and it was too expensive and the food wasn’t all that good.

  18. Service was confused. Had to ask three different waiters to bring a bottle of wine to the table.
Food was served luke warm. I like hot food, not food that appears to have been sitting around waiting for pickup.
Food was passable but nothing great.
Prices are too high on entrees but reasonable on full dinners.
Location sucks. This strip center makes no sense for a high end restaurant.
    Great looking décor.

  19. S says...

I’m a veteran restaurateur and tried Bistro Gastronomie last night. Bottom line: As far as truly authentic GOURMET cuisine, quality of ingredients and culinary execution – IT’S THE BEST IN FLORIDA! Ignore the impossible-to-please compulsive complainers posting here and go eat there…and appreciate the fact we have this miracle here. If chef Julia Child were alive, she’d dine there often and say their Beef Bourguignon was as perfect as it gets.

    • donny g says...

I ate there. food was mediocre as was the service. sorry.

  20. SteveShrink says...

Read all the comments @JeffEats- what a scream! So, we had to take a look. Went there last Friday at 7:00 PM with no reservation. Half the tables were empty, but the very young hostess said they were all booked up. So, we sat at the bar, had a drink and some onion soup (good, but too salty and definitely not excellent) and munched on the Marcona almonds they generously put out. They had a pretty good basket of bread also.

We were there for an hour, and most of the tables that were vacant when we arrived, were still vacant. We wondered if the kitchen and/or wait staff are not yet up to speed and cannot yet handle a full house?

The place is gorgeous- very tasteful, very expensive, very French Brasserie/Bistro-ish. The menu was quite expensive and a la carte. Most of the waiters were older, apparently experienced pros- a good sign?

There were two bartenders- one middle-aged and quite experienced. The other, a senior citizen who seemed to know nothing about working a bar or mixing a cocktail.

Will the place make it? They better get their act together and plate consistently fine food AND get smarter about service, pacing, and table availability for walk-ins. I’m sure the rent is low, but the investment in the build-out looks to be over the top. There are plenty of expensive country club communities within short driving distance, but most of the residents didn’t get rich by foolishly wasting their money. They will need to get value for their dollar. At this moment, I truly don’t know if BG will succeed or not, but I think the odds are against them.

  21. NTW says...

Lots of chatter about this restaurant.

I’m guessing the owner saw Boca Raton as a money maker for a high priced French Restaurant.

I think – just an opinion that a more moderate priced restaurant with a wider array of food would do better here.

  22. NTW says...

BTW/ I just left a commnent – anyway what’s the deal with the valet parking. Small lot anyway.

    • ZEBRA58 says...

The owner having valet parking should tell you that the owners haven’t got the foggiest idea how to run a restaurant. The freaking restaurant is in a 2×4 dumpy strip center. Valet parking is such a dumb idea that I really pity how stupid the owners must be. Also to have spent such a huge amount money on construction tells me that these folks have no idea as to what is needed to be successful.

  23. Fred Dread says...

Valet parking is a clever touch. For people with disposable income, it’s a sign that it’s a classy establishment which is way too good for cheapskates. Even though it’s in a drab mall, it tells you that the establishment is for people of means.

  24. Michael says...

I just finished dining at Bistro Gastronomie and must say that our meal was excellent!!! We were a party of 4 and had the opportunity to try many items on the menu. One dish was better than the next. The food was truly outstanding. Rack of lamb, crab cake, jumbo prawn and grouper special were all delicious. We indulged in the prix fixe and was definitely worth it as the portions were plentiful. Our wait staff was attentive but not obtrusive. While not located in an upscale center, none of that should matter. The restaurant was beautiful and parking was a breeze. We will definitely be back…

  25. Jennifer says...

I had dinner at Bistro Gastronomie last month and I really loved this new restaurant. I live about 5 minutes away and what a great delight that we finally have an upscale French Bistro in our neighborhood. It surely doesn’t matter to me where it is located. When I lived in Aventura, Chef Allen opened up his restaurant in a shopping center in the far corner of the shopping center and its been open now for 20 years and made Chef Allen Susser a legend in South Florida. I am going to Bistro Gastronomie tonight with a friend and I’m looking forward to another great meal. I hope Bistro Gastronomie makes it! Yes, it is a bit costly, but if the food is delicious it will succeed. There are a lot of upscale communities here in West Boca and residents are looking not to drive 25 minutes to East Boca or Del Rey.

  26. Steve C. says...

As a fan of Chef Walden’s talents for more than 15 years in Northern Virginia, I have watched the comments on this site and others closely to see how his new venue would be received. While I understand the negative thoughts about his site selection, I also know that this guy can (and has) produced culinary miracles under a tent in the middle of a field. His resume includes some serious success in some of the best locations in this area, and he has fared well against a number of nationally known chefs (Michel Richard, Patrick O’Connell). I will visit BG for the first time a week or so from now, but having seen what has happened in four previous venues, I am quite confident about what will show up at the table. While no venue please every discriminating diner, I believe everyone should at least try this one before pronouncing it dead on arrival. Given that Chef Walden and I dined together a few times in years past at my favorite Italian restaurant in Maryland, which was rated #1 in Maryland for almost 20 consecutive years – and was in a strip mall in a “low rent” area, I suspect that he knows that things will go well if he manages to deliver incredible food. We’ll see how it goes, but I am very envious of those of you who live close by.

    • Steve C. says...

Finally tried BG last week. Flew to Boca just to dine here. It is everything I expected. The strip mall location only added to the visual impact of this stunning venue. Cuisine was typical Walden – perfect! I found the service to be highly refined. The place was packed on a Wednesday night, which I guess bodes well for the future. Congrats to Chef Walden and his team!!

      • TURNER says...

    Jeff,
Ive lived in the Woodfield Country Club for 2 years. The WCC is literally 3 minutes away from Bistro Gastronomie. The other day I was shopping in Doris Market which is in the same center and looked in on Bistro Gastronomie. Great looking restaurant. Menu looked too expensive for the area. Maybe you can explain why an upscale restaurant like this opened in such a crappy location? Also since it opened I haven’t heard even one of my neighbors has mention the restaurant for either a good or bad recommendation which is kind of strange in that seemingly every new restaurant in this area get talked about over morning coffee here.

I hadn’t given his restaurant any thought whatsoever until I read the great review that the Sun Sentinel gave it last Friday. In looking more into I found Jeff Eats’ writeup and now I read this horrendous comment by this owner. The man should be ashamed of himself.
I had thought of trying Bistro out, but won’t be going there based on Mr. Walden’s comment.
      What a fool.

    • HokeyPokey says...

      Jeff Eats:
William Walden’s comments are about as bizarre as can be.

In all the years that Jeff Eats has been published have you ever received Owner comments wishing people death?

    • dontcry says...

7 figure bank account and your running some bs little restaurant on yamato road. I think your full of sheet.

    • Tonight769 says...

      WW
I can’t believe that you would be stupid enough to write something like this.
      You are obviously a fool.

    • FELICIANO says...

      Willy,
Rather than posting these dumb comments, why don’t you invite Jeff to dinner?
If he likes the food and gets to meet you maybe he’ll see things differently.
The way it stands I would think that he will never actually review your restaurant and let all of these posters do the talking.
Look at his original review on Silver Pond and then look at his second review a total about face.
Be smart get an invite out to him.
      It couldn’t hurt.

    • Sid L. Turner says...

      Willie
      What happened?

      • Henry Shapiro says...

        Crap food
        Crap prices
        Crap service
        Crap location
        That’s what happened.

    • Zimmerman says...

      Walden
      You deserve what you got.
      See Ya!

  31. William Walden says...

    LMFAO

    • Just curious?
Why are you LMFAO when you will probably be out of business within a year’s time?
You must have a real sick sense of humor.
All I know is that if I was going to be in the mess that you are going to be in I definitely wouldn’t be LMFAO.
Your nasty comments will come back to bite you in the ass.
      Mark my words.
As an owner you should just be quite and let your food and service speak for you.
Wishing death to some posters that you don’t even know shows that you aren’t a real business man.
Imagine that you want people you don’t know to die because they have a different opinion than you do.
A smart fellow would keep quiet or defend his food etc not just wish people death.
I would LMFAO if one of the posters that you wished death to was a member of your family.
      Now you take care.
      You asshole.

  32. HOPE98 says...

Just wanted you to know that I am from Scranton Pa. Never lived in NYC.
I’m not Jewish and just happen to be Catholic.
I thought that the food was just fair and overpriced.

  33. LondonMan says...

You are one sick racist anti semetic puppy.
For someone who has no financial interest in this joint you sure do get involved here.
    Haven’t been there yet.
I live 10 minutes away and I’m hearing that the food is good as is the service but it’s too expensive.

  34. Bestmsn says...

    Already cutting their prices.
    Should be telling you something.

  35. GoogleIt says...

    Fred
    You’re here.

  36. michael m says...

I would like to know why an owner of a new restaurant would talk like this and dig his own grave. Maybe its an imposter acting like the owner.

  37. Fred Dreads says...

Ate there last night and I’m starting to see what many of you saw. The food and service weren’t all that great.

  38. Mister Waiter says...

    Jeff Eats:
Can’t figure out how this guy is going to survive.
Food is just fair and too expensive.

  39. Esther Lansky says...

Last night there were eight of us for dinner, we went to try the early price dinner…Between all of us we tried almost everything on the menu..Everyone enjoyed their meal, the service was wonderful, and the place itself is beautiful…..Wishing everyone good luck..

    Didn’t last too long.

That guy Walden and his cronies tried to bs you and us. Didn’t work.

  47. Yikes says...

    Boy was that fast.

  48. TommyGunn says...

    Terrible location.
    Wrong demographics.
    Overpriced.
What did you expect to happen?

  49. Liz Kramer says...

Can’t believe this one folded already.

  50. ken says...

Closed, had a reservation tonight, the doors were locked, no sign.

They did no marketing of anyklind, no ads, NOTHING,

Thats why they went out of business.
