Bistro Gastronomie (Boca Raton)
Bistro Gastronomie (Boca Raton).
Let Jeff Eats do a “mitzvah” here…
To the owner of Bistro Gastronomie which is currently under construction at the intersection of Long Lake Boulevard and Yamato Road in Boca Raton…unless you are planning on washing money or something like that in the upscale French restaurant that you have been spending money like crazy on during the past 8 months or-so…stop everything right now and cut your losses.
Now this is just an opinion, but the demographics for the area tells-Jeff Eats that there is no way in hell that an upscale French restaurant in “your” location has any chance whatsoever of making it. The spot that you are building in ~originally housed a Moe’s Bagel joint and Back Street a moderately priced “American-Style” joint-that had 1-2-3-4 owners before finally calling it a day. Now! If “they” couldn’t move enough bagels/coffee or 4-sliders with French fries for $8.95 to pay the rent, then logic tells me -that your braised rabbit ain’t exactly gonna be flying off the shelf-either.
Sorry I didn’t get to you sooner, but I’ve been busy “studying” why the bay two doors down from yours has had something like six different businesses during the past 3-4 years.
Anyway…good luck!

UPDATE: January 13, 2014
This evening Jeff Eats received an e-mail from Bistro Gastronomie’s owner, William Walden. In addition the Jeff Eats’ site received a number of “Comments” from the same William Walden.
Suffice it to say, Mr. Walden believes that his new restaurant- scheduled to open in February is going to be an extremely successful endeavor.
Since Jeff Eats has no skin in-the Bistro Gastronomie game…how the restaurant fares is of no real concern to me.
Jeff Eats really does wish Bistro Gastronomie and Mr. Walden all the best…that said, Jeff Eats stands by his opinions expressed in my 12/13/2013 story.
Mr. Walden’s e-mail is printed below.

Hello Jeff and Happy New Year! Bistro Gastronomie is slated to open this coming
February. Hopefully you received one of our flyers in the mail this past week. I
just discovered your Blog from a colleague that emailed me the link. WOW. I hope
to get a chance to meet you in the coming weeks and I certainly hope that you
will try my restaurant. Noteworthy is that it has taken an extremely long time
to build out due to the extensive renovations. We plan on being here for years.
Until shortly, Thank you! Executive Chef/Owner William Walden–
This mail is sent via contact form on Jeff Eats http://jeffeats.com
jeff, i have gotten my nails done for years in the manicure store in the center. this restaurant has no chance. how this fellow plans to make a living here is beyond me,
Thank you rks for your kind commentary. We trust that we will see you in our establishment in the very near future. The food will be extraordinary!
will,
best of luck because you are going to really need it.
you obviously don’t know the area.
Now you know why the Germans always beat them.
Know exactly where this is opening.
You couldn’t pick a worse spot even if you tried.
Hope the guy has good fire insurance.
Fireman’s Insurance is the very best that I could find. Thank you. WW
Now, if Mo’s Bagels was back in the center it would probably be a homerun.
Yeah right
The folks in Century Village and Whispering Walk are going to lineup for this one.
Know the location. Has to be in the laundry business.
I am not sure if there is a dry cleaning business close by, however, I promise you that the food will be extremely fresh, exciting, with a beautifully eclectic menu that focuses on taste and the extreme depth of flavor. Voila!
Hey Jeff,
The guy is going to lose his money just like the guys before him in that center.
Sammy’s
We hope that you will join us in the near future for an exciting dining experience. Looking forward to having you as our valued guest(s). Happy New Year. WW
I would like to say I have been watching the progress of this restaurant very closely and thought much like the people in this thread. Last week I was going to Doris’ market and saw a laborer working in this soon to open establishment. Let me say that this is one of the most well put together spots that boca has seen. There is a different level of style in the decor and regardless that I am in my 40’s and don’t meet the demographic I am looking forward to this fresh air blowing my way. You only get one chance to impress however so the food better be on point. I am already recommending many clients and friends. Look out for my reservation I wish you the best…
Sincerely,
Andre Prine
As Queen said it, Another One Bites The Dust.
The man must be insane.
The shopping center he is going into is a 4th rate center. No way that he will find a crowd to support an upscale french restaurant.
Can’t understand why guys like this just don’t do the necessary research on where to open. This center isn’t the right area.
Mr Klein,
We can’t wait to have you in to dine! WW
I say the fellow lasts 4 months tops. Figuring he opens in January he’ll make it to April and then with season ending he’ll finally figure out that he has a huge dog on his hands. This fellow reminds me of the Butcher & Burger guy in Boca Town Center who Jeff and most others warned that he was opening a fiasco. That guy lasted 4 months. What these guys need to do is run their ideas by Jeff before they get involved.
LOL
I’ve been reading about this restaurant and they are using a top designer and builder to construct this restaurant. The owner has to be going for his lungs. I live 5 minutes from the restaurant and every time I’ve past the store I can’t believe what a piss poor location it’s in.
Thank you ZED for your input here. I am hoping to see you soon. Warm Regards, WW
Know this area like the back of my hand. Most of the center’s customers are retired folks on a fixed budget. The big draw is Brendy’s yogurt store where the customers big thing is using their punch cards to get a free cup of yogurt. An upscale French restaurant won’t find an audience.
Hello TAZ,
We are surrounded by a wonderful group of individuals who may appreciate our endeavors here. We hope to see you soon. Looking forward to your valued patronage. WW

I also get my nails done at this center. Big draw here is Doris’ market which has good seafood and Italian foods.
No way a fancy restaurant will make it even with some nice gated communities nearby!
Ive been going to Nailize for years. Have seen going to the center for Doris’ for years. I know the center. I know the area and this restaurant hasn’t got a pray.
Shelly W
Thanks for jumping on the negative bandwagon as has most people on this blog spot. We hope to see you soon in our gorgeous establishment. We are real people with real dreams and a fine talent for cuisine. Enjoy! Happy New Year
Wow, gotta laugh at the miserable old New Yorkers who inhabit this site. Bistro Gastronomie is fantastic news for West Boca and if the food is good, people will travel. Disappointed that they included kosher food though as this has spoiled the authenticity of the place and means it will probably attract lots of miserable old New Yorkers. Can’t wait for it to open!
Jacques,
Take it from as you say one of those ‘old New Yorkers’ this restaurant hasn’t got a chance of making it. The suggestion is that you get there as soon as it opens and go there everyday thereafter because it will have an extremely short life. The best guess here 6 months and that’s being kind. Then again if the owner was stupid enough to pick that spot and stupid enough to spend money building the restaurant he may be stupid enough to keep the place open even though he is running in the red. When the restaurant finally closes you’ll know that the ‘old New Yorkers’ knew and you didn’t know shit from shinola.
Jacques Tati,:
A drop anti-semetic there don’t you think?
Take it from this born and bred Philadelphia Roman Catholic 63 year old Roman Catholic girl that Bistro Gastronomie literally hasn’t got a prayer.
When the smoke clears you’ll find that anyone with half a brain could see a disaster long before the doors ever opened.
I think the word you are looking for is “Semitic” (note the spelling). And no, you are incorrect.
Good food withstanding, no one is traveling to this one. You obviously know nothing about its location, simply put, it’s terrible. The surrounding area is made up of mostly retired folks who are looking for good prices. This restaurant will prove to be a white elephant.
you maybe wrong or the owner is stupid but there is no way that you can have kosher and non kosher in the same restaurant. kosher requires a kosher kitchen and kosher dishware. no way that there are 2 kitchens and different dishware in this place.
in any event, bistro wont be around long enough for anyone to be too worried about the kosher and non kosher issues.
very foolish man opening in a geriatic shopping center where the big sellers are yogurt in a cup for a buck.
kosher my ass.
i give this joint 6 months before the sheriff comes buy for non payment of rent.
the man should listen to jeff and just run away now.
Are you really a Rabbi?
Rabbi Shemtov of Israel could humble you a bit. Perhaps you will like to meet him? I will NOT have a Kosher kitchen and am very familiar with all of the practices of the religion with years of experience involving presidents, dignitaries, and yes, sour old miserable beings. I will have a rabbinical blessing prior to opening. I hope that you give us a try and feel refreshed and restored after your complaints and ignorance. WW
the only one that’s going to be miserable is the owner, ’cause he’s going to lose his freaking shirt, while we’ll be next door eating our carbolite cones.
Thank you for your vote of confidence. Seems that you and alot of others have alot of time to bash and share your negativity. Perhaps while enjoying your coupon cone, you could notice the decline in parking spots with those eager to experience what we have to offer?
All I know is if BackStreet with its huge portions and cheap prices couldn’t make it there, Bistro Whateveritsnameis hasn’t got a prayer.
Those miserable old New Yorkers as you call them won’t be half as miserable as your bud who owns this mess will be when he sees his money going down the drain each and every day that he is open. Just watch and you’ll see how smart us miserable old New Yorkers really are.
Jacques Tati:
Bet you a Brendy’s yogurt that Bistro is a failure. I know the strip center and it is the wrong place for this type of restaurant. Let me know if you want to take the bet.
Jacques Tati,
Merci Beaucoup. Look for a revised version of the menu to be available on our website early next week. http://www.BistroGastronomie.com. We can’t wait to see you. Unfortunately, I just received a link to this wonderful blogspot this evening and your commentary is like a breath of fresh air……hopefully it will be contagious! LOL A bientot WW
Jacques
Thank you for your kind sentiment and commentary. We’ve done alot of research and refined our menu.Modern American French Country Cuisine. The menu has changed somewhat to what was posted in West Boca News. I am hoping to see you in early February. Merci Beaucoup! WW
I forgot about this miserable meeting place for depressed old north-easterners. I give them six months before they keel over and die…tops! I stumbled across this doom factory again when I wanted to find out when the eagerly-awaited Bistro Gastronomie will open. And before you cretins say anything, I have nothing whatsoever to do with the owner or the business. I’m just excited that a, hopefully, top class and charming restaurant is coming to West Boca. It’s looks fantastic from the outside. I’m a firm believer that if it’s good, people will come. To William Walden, all I will say is I’ll be there as soon as you open! It’s the little things that will make it special, I hope, such as real French bread and beurre alongside the delicious French cooking and wines. Can’t wait!
Tati
Just watch and you’ll learn.
They don’t have a chance.
Let me guess, you are white, in your 60s or 70s, originally from NY/NJ, and are bitter about pretty much everything?
Why not take the I-95 and go all the way back home.
Bye!
Opened and closed.
You loser.
Based on the amount being spent to build this restaurant and the amount that is going to be lost operating this restaurant the guy won’t have any money left to launder. The guy is making a HUGE MISTAKE opening.
Kenny,
Your comments are Grossly ridiculous. Money laundering is a libelous suggestion. Perhaps you will be on our VIP List or the Black One? Hope to see you soon. All the best,,,,,,,,Shalom Shalom
taJeff,
My wife and I are huge fans of Brendy’s in Boca Raton. We are there at least twice a week for yogurt. Over the past number of months we have been watching the so called building of this French restaurant which is right next door to Brendy’s and for the life of us can’t figure what this owner is thinking. The small center that he is planning on opening in is totally wrong for a French restaurant not to mention a fancy schmanzy one at that. You are so right that the demographics don’t warrant such an enterprise. Only time will tell on this project but like you I think that the owner should just stop now and run.
WOW. It seems as if I am responding to constant negativity. Boca Raton has been voted the rudest city in the US for 4 consecutive years. I now know why. Perhaps you will see beyond your nose and give us a try? You won’t be disappointed, even with the prices. Happy New Year. WW
I’m in that center at least twice a week and it sure is taking this guy a very long time to build this restaurant. Can’t imagine what’s taking so long.
If and when he opens I will definitely give the place a try.
Thank you Mrs.Greenberg as I am happy to answer: We decided after careful planning to “gut” the building and hire the finest designer in South Florida, Shuster Designs, INC. The warmth, the Fabrics, and the overall feel of the place is well worth our wait. Please enjoy the restaurant this coming February. Warm Regards, Chef/Owner WW
There is an old saying that a fool and his money are soon parted.
This restaurant has a snowball’s chance in hell of making it.
Been in Boca for over 33 years and have seen misconceived restaurants come and go.
Piss poor location is the Bottomline here. Just that simple.
Thank you Joe.
We all know what opinions are like. Please give us a try. We love the location and our landlord. I’ll take your snowball’s chance of making it, in fact, I am counting on it as it appears the Devil is already re-incarnate with the above bloggers………probably cold in hell as a result. Happy New Year
The Taj Mahal took less time to build.
Jeff,
Are you saying that the guy doesn’t have a chance even if he has great food?
If the food is good and the prices reasonable I believe the owner will have a real shot at making this thing work. There aren’t many good French restaurants in s Florida so he may just have something here.
Barb J,
The food will be extremely fresh and the prices will be on the lower side for a restaurant of our caliber. Thank you for your kind commentary. You and only one other have submitted something positive here, Looking forward to your valued patronage. Thank you. Executive Chef/Owner William Walden
Back Street was very good. The owners were in their late 60’s and retired. I’ll bet this concept fails.
I bet you are wrong. We have the very finest servers and staff in the entire region. Hoping that you will become one of our regulars. Sorry, no coupons here!
Let’s get this one open and see what it’s all about.
I’ve walked by it at least 20 times in recent months and the windows for the most part are papered over so you really can’t see in.
personally I don’t think that it is such a hot spot for a French restaurant but I’m willing to see what’s what before passing judgment.
Jeff,
I just had yogurt at Brendy’s which is right next door to this place and they are still under construction. It seems like this work has been going on forever. I looked in but it was pretty dark in there but I did see that there is still plenty of work to do.
What in the world is this guy thinking?
Ive lived in the area for 19 years and I can’t even fathom that a French restaurant has a chance in that location.
I recall when it was BackStreet and before that Mo’s and both of those moderate priced restaurants struggled big time.
I think that Jeff is dead wrong here. I think that this restaurant is going to find a niche and do quite well. Of course, it has to open and it is sure taking a long time to do that.
I also think that Jeff is dead wrong here. We will find our niche and do very well. The build out has been so extensive due to our decision to renovate from the ground up and that is exactly what we have done. Thank you Orlando for one of the very few and objective positive comments. I look forward to having you as our valued guest in early February! Merci!
It’s all about the Food: This will be fantastic and wonderful for West Boca. People will travel for good food. My Partner and I look forward to our burgeoning success and the wonderful support of the local community. Happy New Year to all……….
WW:
My wife and I have resided in the Broken Sound Country Club for over 15 years. To say that we are familiar with most of Boca’s restaurants would be an understatement. We also know something about Boca’s population and how this City works.
We hope that your restaurant is a phenomenal success.
The only question we have for you, Is did you spend any time studying the demographics 10 miles N-E-S-W of your location?
Once again, only the best things, but we think you will find that you sorely picked the wrong spot to open an upscale restaurant.
You have it figured all wrong.
You are in a local grade c center.
Maybe in Mizner or Las Olas or S Beach people travel to eat but not to a dumpy center in the middle of nowhere in Boca.
Thank you Jeff for the posting. Looking forward to having you as our valued guest in the not too distant future. Much appreciated. I received the link from my equal business partner and felt compelled to respond. All the best and Happy New Year. WW
William Walden:
Just had a chance to read your latest comment…
Good luck with the restaurant.
Really do hope that one day you can tell me, “I told you so.”
By the way, Fireman’s Insurance was a good pick.
Thanks for reading…
Jeff,
The odds:
Slim and None.
WW should read your call on Burger & Butcher.
That owner also thought he knew better.
WW can reach him back in Chicago because his Boca business is no more.
Jeff,
I live literally 2 minutes away.
I hope they make it.
It would be nice to have a really good restaurant in that spot.
Only time will tell if they can pull it off.

You, Mr. Gross, and RonA might need to review Florida law statute 836.

Just had a chance to read your comments.
You obviously are not an attorney.
Thanks for reading…
No one said that WW is doing anything wrong. By the way, there is no defense to the truth.
It’s folks like you who like to play lawyer that actually thought that Zimmerman was innocent.
Don’t let the 1st amendment and right to express an opinion get in your way.
I’m going on record right now that this restaurant will last maybe 1 year.
WW couldn’t have picked a worse location.
ROTFLMFAO.
Maybe you should go to Law School or something.
You have no idea as to what you are talking about.
I say that WW is going to have a huge disaster on his hands.
Elaine Baker:
If you think that opinions and comedy are libel, you need to get a life.
Read, and don’t play lawyer.
libel 1) n. to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of others. Libel is the written or broadcast form of defamation, distinguished from slander which is oral defamation. It is a tort (civil wrong) making the person or entity (like a newspaper, magazine or political organization) open to a lawsuit for damages by the person who can prove the statement about him/her was a lie. Publication need only be to one person, but it must be a statement which claims to be fact, and is not clearly identified as an opinion. While it is sometimes said that the person making the libelous statement must have been intentional and malicious, actually it need only be obvious that the statement would do harm and is untrue. Proof of malice, however, does allow a party defamed to sue for “general damages” for damage to reputation, while an inadvertent libel limits the damages to actual harm (such as loss of business) called “special damages.” “Libel per se” involves statements so vicious that malice is assumed and does not require a proof of intent to get an award of general damages. Libel against the reputation of a person who has died will allow surviving members of the family to bring an action for damages. Most states provide for a party defamed by a periodical to demand a published retraction. If the correction is made, then there is no right to file a lawsuit. Governmental bodies are supposedly immune for actions for libel on the basis that there could be no intent by a non-personal entity, and further, public records are exempt from claims of libel. However, there is at least one known case in which there was a financial settlement as well as a published correction when a state government newsletter incorrectly stated that a dentist had been disciplined for illegal conduct. The rules covering libel against a “public figure” (particularly a political or governmental person) are special, based on U. S. Supreme Court decisions. The key is that to uphold the right to express opinions or fair comment on public figures, the libel must be malicious to constitute grounds for a lawsuit for damages. Minor errors in reporting are not libel, such as saying Mrs. Jones was 55 when she was only 48, or getting an address or title incorrect. 2) v. to broadcast or publish a written defamatory statement. (See: defamation, slander, libel per se, public figure)

LIBEL, practice. A libel has been defined to be “the plaintiff’s petition or allegation, made and exhibited in a judicial process, with some solemnity of law;” it is also, said to be “a short and well ordered writing, setting forth in a clear manner, as well to the judge as to the defendant, the plaintiff’s or accuser’s intention in judgment.” It is a written statement by a plaintiff, of his cause of action, and of the relief he seeks to obtain in a suit. Law’s Eccl. Law, 147; Ayl. Par. 346; Shelf. on M. & D. 506; Dunl. Admr. Pr. 111; Betts. Adm. Pr. 17; Proct. Pr. h.t.; 2 Chit. Pr. 487, 533.
2. The libel should be a narrative, specious, clear, direct, certain, not general, nor alternative. 3 Law’s Eccl. Law. 147. It should contain, substantially, the following requisites: 1. The name, description, and addition of the plaintiff, who makes his demand by bringing his action. 2 The name, description, and addition of the defendant. 3. The name of the judge with a respectful designation of his office and court. 4. The thing or relief, general or special, which is demanded in the suit. 5. The grounds upon which the suit is founded. All these things are summed up in Latin, as follows;
Quis, quid, coram quo, quo jure petitur, et a quo,
Recte compositus quique libellus habet: which has been translated,
Each plaintiff and defendant’s name,
and eke the judge who tries the same,
The thing demanded and the right whereby
You urge to have it granted instantly:
He doth a libel write and well compose,
Who forms the same, emitting none of those.
3. The form of a libel is either simple or articulate. The simple form is, when the cause of action is stated in a continuous narration, when the cause of action can be briefly set forth. The articulate form, is when the cause of action is stated in distinct allegations, or articles. 2 Law’s Eccl. Law, 148; Hall’s Adm. Pr. 123; 7 Cranch, 349. The material facts should be stated in distinct articles in the libel, with as much exactness and attention to times and circumstances, as in a declaration at common law. 4 Mason, 541. Pompous diction and strong epithets are out of place in a legal paper designed to obtain the admission of the opposite party of the averments it contains, or to lay before the court the facts which the actor will prove.
4. Although there is no fixed formula for libels and the court will receive such an instrument from the party in such form as his own skill or that of his counsel may enable him to give it, yet long usage has sanctioned forms, which it may be most prudent to adopt. The parts and arrangement of libels commonly employed are,
5.-1. The address to the court; as, To the Honorable John K. Kane, Judge of the district court of the United States, within and for the eastern district of Pennsylvania.
6.-2. The names and descriptions of the parties. Persons competent to sue at common law may be parties libellants, and similar regulations obtain in the admiralty courts and the common law courts, respecting those disqualified from suing in their own right or name. Married women prosecute by their husbands, or by prochein ami, when the husband has an adverse interest to hers; minors, by guardians, tutors, or prochein ami; lunatics and persons non compos mentis, by tutor, guardian ad litem, or committee; the rights of deceased persons are prosecuted by executors or administrators; and corporations are represented, and proceeded against as at common law.
7.-3. The averments or allegations setting forth the cause of action should be conformable to the truth, and so framed as to correspond with the evidence. Every fact requisite to establish the libellant’s right should be clearly stated, so that it may be directly met by the opposing party by admission, denial or avoidance; this is the more necessary because no proof can be given, or decree rendered, not covered by and conformable to the allegations. 1 Law’s Eccl. Laws, 150; Hall’s Pr. 126; Dunl. Adm. Pr. 113; 7 Cranch, 394.
8.-4. The conclusion, or prayer for relief and process; the prayer should be for the specific relief desired; for general relief, as is usual in bills in chancery; the conclusion should also pray for general, or particular process. Law’s Eccl. Law, 149; and see 3 Mason, R. 503. Interrogatories are sometimes annexed to the libel; when this is the case, there is usually a special prayer, that the defendant may be required to answer the libel, and the interrogatories annexed and propounded. This, however, is a dangerous practice, because it renders the answers of the defendant evidence, which must be disproved by two witnesses, or by one witness, corroborated by very strong circumstances.
9. The libel is the first proceeding in a suit in admiralty in the courts of the United States. 3 Mason, R., 504. It is also used in some other courts. Vide, generally, Dunl. Adm. Pr. ch. 3; Bett’s Adm. Pr. s. 3; Shelf. on. M. & D. 606; Hall’s Adm. Pr. Index, h.t.; 3 Bl. Com. 100; Ayl. Par. Index, h.t.; Com. Dig. Admiralty, E; 2 Roll. &b. 298.
LIBEL, libellus, criminal law. A malicious defamation expressed either in printing or writing, or by signs or pictures, tending to blacken the memory of one who is dead, with intent to provoke the living; or the reputation of one who is alive, and to expose him to public hatred, contempt, or ridicule. Hawk. b. 1, c. 73, s. 1; Wood’s Inst, 444; 4 Bl. Com. 150; 2 Chitty, Cr. Law, 867; Holt on Lib. 73; 5 Co. 125; Salk. 418; Ld. Raym. 416; 4. T. R. 126; 4 Mass. R. 168; 9 John. 214; 1 Den. Rep. 347; 2 Pick. R. 115; 2 Kent, Com. 13. It has been defined perhaps with more precision to be a censorious or ridiculous writing, picture or sign made with a malicious or mischievous intent, towards government magistrates or individuals. 3 John. Cas. 354; 9 John. R. 215; 5 Binn. 340.
2. In briefly considering this offence, we will inquire, 1st. By what mode of expression a libel may be conveyed. 2d. Of what kind of defamation it must consist. 3d. How plainly it must be expressed. 4th. What mode of publication is essential.
3.-1. The reduction of the slanderous matter to writing, or printing, is the most usual mode of conveying it. The exhibition of a picture, intimating that which in print would be libelous, is equally criminal. 2 Camp. 512; 5 Co. 125; 2 Serg. & Rawle 91. Fixing a gallows at a man’s door, burning him in effigy, or exhibiting him in any ignominious manner, is a libel. Hawk. b. 1, c. 73, s. 2,; 11 East, R. 227.
4.-2. There is perhaps no branch of the law which is so difficult to reduce to exact, principles, or to compress within a small compass, as the requisites of a libel. All publications denying the Christian religion to be true; 11 Serg. & Rawle, 394; Holt on Libels, 74; 8 Johns. R. 290; Vent. 293; Keb. 607; all writings subversive of morality and tending to inflame the passions by indecent language, are indictable at common law. 2 Str. 790; Holt on Libels, 82; 4 Burr. 2527. In order to constitute a libel, it is not necessary that anything criminal should be imputed to the party injured; it is enough if the writer has exhibited him in a ludicrous point of view; has pointed him out as an object of ridicule or disgust; has, in short, done that which has a natural tendency to excite him to revenge. 2 Wils. 403; Bacon’s Abr. Libel, A 2; 4 Taunt. 355; 3 Camp. 214; Hardw. 470; 5 Binn. 349. The case of Villars v. Monsley, 2 Wils. 403, above cited, was grounded upon the following verses, which were held to be libelous, namely:
“Old-Villers, so strong of brimstone you smell,
As if not long since you had got out of hell,
But this damnable smell I no longer can bear,
Therefore I desire you would come no more here;
You, old stinking; old nasty, old itchy, old toad,
If you come any more you shall pay for your board,
You’ll therefore take this as a warning from me,
And never enter the doors, while they belong to J. P.
Wilncot, December 4, 1767.”
5. Libels against the memory of the dead which have a tendency to create a breach of the peace by inciting the friends and relatives of the deceased to avenge the insult of the family, render their authors liable to legal animadversion. 5 co. 123; 5 Binn. 281; 2 Chit. Cr. Law, 868; 4 T. R. 186.
6.-3. If the matter be understood as scandalous, and is calculated to excite ridicule or abhorrence against the party intended, it is libelous, however it may be expressed. 5 East, 463; 1 Price, 11, 17; Hob. 215; Chit. Cr. Law, 868; 2 Campb. 512.
7.-4. The malicious reading of a libel to one or more persons, it being on the shelves in a bookstore, as other books, for sale; and where the defendant directed the libel to be printed, took away some and left others; these several acts have been held to be publications. The sale of each copy; where several copies have been sold, is a distinct publication, and a fresh offence. The publication must be malicious; evidence of the malice may be either express or implied. Express proof is not necessary: for where a man publishes a writing which on the face of it is libelous, the law presumes he does so from that malicious intention which constitutes the offence, and it is unnecessary, on the part of the prosecution, to prove any circumstance from which malice may be inferred. But no allegation, however false and malicious, contained in answers to interrogatories, in affidavits duly made, or any other proceedings, in courts of justice, or petitions to the legislature, are indictable. 4 Co. 14; 2 Burr. 807; Hawk. It is no defence that the matter published is part of a document printed by order of the house of commons. 9 A. &E. 1.

definitely one of the dumbest posts I’ve read on this site.
OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This one won’t make it.
I find it amazing how judgmental so many people can be about a restaurant that has not even OPENED yet. Give the place a chance. There are real people here trying to employ other real people and make a small business work, something that is much more difficult today than a short time ago ago, Try it and if you then have something to say about the place, I would bet the owners will pay attention. I have never seen a blog with so much negativity. This will be my first and last comment on this blog. Oh and I live in Coral Springs and am looking forward to traveling the 25 minutes to try Bistro Gastronomie.
mark, since you won’t be reading this, all I can say is make that 25 mile trip really fast because this restaurant won’t last too long.
Good for you that you live in Coral Springs 25 miles away this way you won’t have to drive by daily as this restaurant starts to take on water and eventually sinks. Mark this post.
It would seem that Jeff Eats and the rest of the naysayers have their collective head up their arse, where it appears they do most of their dining. They probably would not know fine food if it hit them in the mouth. Come on folks, give the guy a break. He’s trying to bring you a little “culcha”.
tumms, you want to read feelgood stuff, go read the sun sentinel. jeff eats is a one of a kind blog. a place to discuss food, business and other things.
fine food blah blah. ww is in for the shock of his life when the place goes dark.
now you take care.
Jeff
Let’s see what Bistro has to say for itself 6 months from now .
I don’t see it doing too well,
But we’ll see.
Unlike Jeff, some of us are optimistic about Bistro Gastronomie. There are some wealthy communities nearby, like The Oaks. And there’s no comparable French Restaurant.
People drive all the way from West Boca to Melting Pot. This will be much better good. At least that’s our hope.
I hereby challenge Jeff to a bet. I predict BG will still be open one year after it opens. If I’m wrong I’ll buy you a yogurt at Brendy’s. If I’m right you owe me one. 🙂
West Boca News:
Just had a chance to read your comments.
Sorry, but Jeff Eats can’t take you up on your bet.
Since Jeff Eats has no “skin” in this restaurant, it makes no difference to me if it fails or succeeds. That said, regular readers know that Jeff Eats always wishes restaurant ventures the best of luck.
Now, if Jeff Eats took your bet, I would sorta have “skin” in the game–and instinctively have me rooting against Bistro’s success.
So for the $1.19 small yogurt that I might win, I’d prefer to pass–and just be a Monday Morning Quarterback.
Thanks for reading…
Jeff, you sure know to play these guys.
Love the blog.
I’m with you, bad news down the road.
the melting pot is a joke.
bg is in huge trouble from the get go.
i am going to assume that the rent is decent.
look at what is in the center. just neighborhood type stores. nails, cleaners, mail, pizza, chinese, liquor.
nothing upscale.
now go 5 miles n.
no upscale restaurants.
now go 5 miles s., e., and w.,
same story
now if an upscale french restaurant can work in those 20 miles how come some other genius didnt open one in the area?
the reason, the area doesnt need it.
and yes i know all about all of the new home development in the area.
the general population isnt into french food. maybe italian, maybe greek, maybe japanese but not french.
jeff understands real estate and the restaurant business and that’s why he made the call that he did.
could he be wrong.
sure.
we’ll find out soon enough.
I give them 12 months.
Jeff
They can argue all they want. It won’t last long.
Reading more comments, this place is hysterical. It seems to be full of twisted old New Yorkers whose palates and wallets can’t stretch beyond bagels, hot dogs and basic sports bar “delicacies”. I bet most of them go to Ben’s Deli and then complain in the hope of getting free food.
This blog should be renamed Jeff Bleats!
Jeff
Tons of chatter here.
Know the location.
Know the population.
Know that it won’t work.
How discouraging it is to read these comments from my fellow neighbors. How downright nasty. I feel like apologizing on behalf of my community, in general, for the pessimistic tone and maliciousness of the comments made here. These were not just opinions or friendly advice – something that could actually be of some use to Mr. Walden. Unfortunately, since they were all smeared in sarcasm and malice, none of the potentially good recommendations will have been “heard”. Personally, I have tried going to Back Street and wasn’t a big fan, but I am hopeful that this new endeavor is a successful one. As a matter of fact, specifically BECAUSE of the above comments I will give it a couple of tries and do my part to support growth in my neighborhood and help out a fellow human being. You gotta eat, right? Why not there?? Best of luck!
Thank You Immensely. Looking forward to having you as our valued guests!
nasty?
we are just calling it like we see it.
the joint ain’t got a chance.
U gotta laugh at the narrow-minded transplants who rant on here. It’s quite bizarre how they can get so angry about what appears to be a beautiful French restaurant opening in the neighborhood. Why wouldn’t you want it to be a success, even if you can’t afford to dine there? It is dramatically improving one of the saddest, old people strip malls in West Boca. Let me guess, if it was a deli, Chinese, Italian, or something with “New York” in its name, they would be pissing their cheapskate pants that they had somewhere else to go for an earlybird special!
Jacques , baby honey!
No matter how much you rant and rave, the joint is going to fail. Go to the bank on that.
Couldn’t care less if it makes it or not.
Just know it’s in the wrong location.
I have eaten at Bill’s restaunts in Virginia and the food he prepares is amazing. Hopefully he will get the same kind of following in FL that he had in the Washington, D.C. area. We will be coming to FL in March and will be stopping in for sure. Not going to bet on the long term outlook, but one thing for sure will be the quality of the food.
Happy New Year R Dietz! I can’t wait to see you here in March! Best wishes and I appreciate the commentary juxtaposed everything else!! LOL
WW, wishing you much success! At least you give as good as you get! Momma Mia I’m suffocating from all the air being sucked away…lol.
The negativity of the comments here are astounding. I had no idea I was living in the midst of such nasty people. How about welcoming and supporting a new business in Boca and telling the chef good luck.
I don’t know about the rest of you negative people, but I can’t wait for this restaurant to open. I also know that if the food is good, people will come from all over the city to eat there.
I’ll be there for sure chef, you can count on me for positive support.
Don’t wait too long to get there because it won’t be around very long.
Was just in the center and looked in. Great looking restaurant. Very bad location. Actually horrendous best describes the location. No way it will survive.
Enough already.
Let the guy open.
Anyone with half a brain from the area knows that his chances of surviving are slight to non existent.
He will soon learn the hard way that he wasn’t as smart as he thought he was.
And you wonder why everyone hates stooopid New Yorkers…
Now you’ve gone too far. You may not like the comments regarding this restaurant opening, but you are showing your true colors and the hatred you obviously have New Yorkers. (Former) New Yorkers keep Florida restaurants in business and our money is just as green as yours. This restaurant will certainly give the Lakeridge Shopping Center a lift, but I saw the exorbitant prices on their menu, and I don’t give them 6 months, not to mention the lousy parking. However, since there won’t be a lot of people there, that won’t be a problem.
To The Owner:
I wish you luck on your new venture.
I have to agree with many here that the location isn’t too good.
I just took a look at your menu and I think you will soon find that your price points are way too high for area.
Once again, good luck.
Just saw its menu online. Pricing is way too expensive.
Like you I just checked the menu.
The owner is in for the shock of his life.
Wrong center. Wrong price points.
Location, location, location… is a myth in restaurants. While the surrounding area is rife with negative old grumps (yeah, I shop at Doris’)there are still plenty of people whose taste buds haven’t dried up and can appreciate quality. I’m in my seventies and have no problem driving to WPB, Ft. Laud – even Miami – to get good food. And there are lots of folks like me. If coupons and yogurt are your thing, well, you probably have no reason going to a good restaurant in the first place. As for Backstreet, when Harvey owned it it made money. He simply lost interest in the end.
Bistro opens Feb. 12 – I already have my reservation.
Maybe it works in mizner park or on las olas but the location of this new restaurant couldn’t be worse. I really wish the owners well but they are going to need a shit load of people from outside the 5 mile radius to come and eat to make this thing work. Only time will tell but my guess is that a disaster is in the making.
By the way Harvey was losing his shirt at Backstreet and that’s why he sold it. He had to take it back because the buyer couldn’t pay the notes. Harvey then ended up closing for good because the restaurant wasn’t doing enough business.
hey jeff, got a good one for you. this afternoon i was in nailize which is in the center and some woman sitting said and i quote “Gastro? What a dumb name that is.” This restaurant has failure written al over it.
I wish the owners the best of luck on their new restaurant. I am shocked at how rude the posters on here are. I look forward to dining in this new restaurant.
I think they open in a few days. We’ll see how they do.
The game is on!
DGT sums up the stooopidity of many of the posters on here. Why are these cretins all wishing failue on the restaurant? Nasty, jealous, badly-educated New Yorkers, methinks.
Sid L Turner, the same. What you mean: The Game Is On?
Are you hoping the restaurant does badly?
Most bizarre.
