Smokehouse Grille & Wingery (Boca Raton)

Posted on October 20th, 2010 · American BBQ Boca Raton

***** Smokehouse Grille & Wingery, 2257 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 391-9110.

Smokehouse Grille & Wingery is a “wings-bbq” joint that opened in Boca Raton about 6 weeks. Don’t have the time to hash out all of the details, but the location for something like 20 years, was the home of Boca Wings & Ribs- which served decent enough wings and ribs, but nothing that anyone would go nuts over. The new owners, remodled the joint and “revamped” the menu. More importantly, Smokehouse turns out some heavy duty delicious grilled-smoked-fried wings, bbq chicken, bbq ribs, burgers.

Check menu/prices at www.smokehouseboca.com.

Now, Smokehouse isn’t exactly a “hole in the wall”- it has about 65 seats…then again, it isn’t a big joint ala Tony Roma’s or Bobby Rubino’s. Very reasonable prices. Huge portions. Pleasant and competent service. AND…some really good food. A recent outing had me doing, 10 teryaki wings ($8.25), bbq chicken & rib combo (1/2 chicken, 1/2 rack. 2 sides–$15.95), hamburger ($7.95)…trust me on this one—the stuff was right on the money. If you are a Jeff Eats’ regular, you know that SMOKED bbq ribs aren’t exactly one of my favorite eating-items. Just so you know, Smokehouse, smokes its ribs…but, the rack that I had, “weren’t too hot and weren’t too cold, but were just right” (courtesy- The Three Little Pigs). Based on the bbq that I had, the guys running Smokehouse appear to have this “smoking” thing correctly figured-out.

I am telling you, this one is a winner.

From what I can tell, Smokehouse is still “flying” under the radar. The joint is in a nondescript strip-center. If I wasn’t on the “prowl” for new restaurants to try, I probably would have passed this one by, because you don’t even notice it from the road. The bet here, is that the crowd that frequents “goldmine” next-door strip center- bbq joint- Mississippi Sweets, will soon be beating Smokehouse’s doors down…and then you’ll have to wait on line to stuff your face.

Smokehouse is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm.

Jeff, My husband and I have been going to Miss. Sweets in Boca for years. The food is excellent. The restaurant was quite small until a recent remodel into the next store added desperately needed seating. Despite the expansion, there is often a line waiting to get in. About 10 years ago, we tried Boca Wings and as you mentioned it was okay but nothing that could match its neighbor Miss Sweets’ food. We are definitely going to try Smokehouse. The menu selections look great.
    Thanks for the pick.

Good ribs and bbq chicken at Mississippi. Been going there for over 15 years. Tried Somehouse the other evening and the ribs, chicken are as good if not better. Much larger selection of main items and sides. Smokehouse is also better than PA which is on Dixie and Glades in Boca. PA is good but Smokehouse is better.

Read your review and went to Smokehouse last night.
First let me say, that the waitresses are as friendly and personabale as can be.
My husband had babyback ribs. They were smoked but not overly smoked. I tried a couple and they were good, but I found the sauce to have a drop too much spice for my taste. He enjoyed them and they fell off the bone because they were extremely tender. The fries and corn on the cob which were his sides were good.
For my main dish, I had a grilled chicken and shrimp dish which came with vegetables and mashed potatoes. My food was delicious.
    We enjoyed the restaurant.

Carson’s use to be on Fed Hwy in Boca and opened about 15 years ago. It made the best bbq ribs going. Too Bad it closed. It was an upscale restaurant and the ribs were absolutely delicious. There also use to be a bbq restaurant called Randy’s Ribs. Not as fancy as Carson’s but this one which was in Lake Worth made ribs just like Carson’s. More Chinese style than smoked ones. Too bad it also closed. There also use to be a bbq joint called Wyles in Manhattan, same kind of Chinese racks of ribs. Also great, but also long gone.
Like you I don’t go for full off the bone ribs. I like Chinese over smoked any day of the week.

    Jeff,
    Ate there last night.
    The fried wings are delicious.
The babybacks are too smoked and too heavily sauced for my palate.
    The chicken/shrimp combo was awesome.
    Okay ff.
    Good corn on the cob.
All in all, pretty good call.
    Will be back.

Ate there yesterday afternoon. had the smoked wings and St. Louis ribs with curly fries and baked beans. Everything was the best we ever had.

    terrific wings.

Based upon your review I took my family there a few days ago. It was “fair” at best! We had a variety of dishes And there were complaints about all….Ribs (baby back & St. Louis) were ok once you got past the tough outer crust and the ends were dry; chicken had an excellent smoke finish but was dry; wings were just OK; cornbread was spoiled with way too many ingreients; mac and cheese was a big glob of tasteless cheese; beans were OK. We will not be going back. Many of your other reviews have been spot on…sorry about this one.

Have to revoke my earlier comments went back fof lunch this week and ribs and chicken were only fair. Could not believe the difference from my first visit.

      Frank,
give it a shot again. i heard that their kitchen manager passed away and they had to redial some things in with his loss. give it a shot. everything is as good or even better than before.

Sun Sentinel gave this an “A” the other day.
Jeff, once again you were ahead of the curve.
    Thanks,
    BVB

Too much smoke, too spicy sauces, and outer crust too tough? The latter is called a bark and is what BBQ is about.

BBQ enthusiasts seek all of these desired traits and Smokehouse delivers on this! Miiss. Sweets comes nowhere close.

    Good BBQ, bad wings.

  14. zaza says...

  15. nickie says...

    Jeff:
This has to be one of your best finds ever. I love wings. Every sports bar seems to make them. On top of that you have Buffalo Wild Wings, Hurrican, Bru’s and many others that specialize in wings. I have to tell you that Smokehouse’s wings are by far and away the best wings that I have eaten here in Florida and elsewhere.
    Thanks again for the pick.
I also wanted to tell you that I really enjoy reading your site and have tried many of your picks.
    Thanks,
    Loni

Smokehouse is taking another space at 441 and Yamato Rd in Boca. Thirsty Turtle use to be there.

    • DS says...

      Turtle was lousy.
Smokehouse’s food is excellent. Great wings.
I recently had a bunch of people over to my house to watch the Heat. We ordered 150 wings. Had something like 6 different flavors and everyone of them was delicious, well maybe the honey mustard was a bit too strong.
      Everyone enjoyed the food.
The new location is a great spot in West Boca.

    • FAR says...

      George Y,
I was in that shopping center last weekend and they are still fixing up the new store. Jeff’s review blown up to something like 4ft by 1 1/2 ft is in the front window.

I also ate dinner in the Fed Hwy store last night. The wings are excellent. same goes for the mac & cheese.

I love their wings. The only things I dont like are their smoked food. So you now know to stay away from the smoked.

  23. Bob Cantor says...

Tried the new Boca store on Yamato Road. It is probably 5 times the size of the original location. Food is as good, same for the service. They make some of the best wings and baby backs that I have ever eaten.
I highly recommend the new location.
