Authentic Brooklyn Pizza (Boca Raton)

Posted on July 10th, 2010 · Boca Raton Italian Pizza

Authentic Brooklyn Pizza, 1367 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33486 (561) 368-1168.

On July 8, 2010 Jeff Eats got the following email…

“Hi Jeff, I was hoping I could get u 2 do a review? I have reviews from worstpizza.com, Urbanspoon, Boca Magazine, we where on channel 12 news and many others. If u have any questions u can call me Alan 305-747-6330.”

About an hour ago, I gave “mom & pop–red sauce” pizza joint, Authentic Brooklyn Pizza a shot. Authentic’s menu is loaded and I do mean loaded with all kinds of special pizza combinations. In addition there are calzones, soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, meat-seafood-chicken entrees. When I arrived, the restaurant was busy with 6 booths filled and my table for 2. As I waited for my large plain pizza to arrive, I “noticed” some real- nice looking subs, calzones and pizzas coming out of the kitchen.

Based on the extensive menu, the fact that the joint was busy, the dynamite review that my pals at www.worstpizza.com had given this joint’s pizza and the “visual”— I thought that I would soon be devouring some outrageously good pizza…but au contraire—the pizza that I got was nothing special. The sauce was kinda bland–the crust wasn’t crispy and was flakey like a croissant.

Based on the pizza “alone”- I wouldn’t be running back to this joint so fast.

As I mentioned, prior to my sojourn to Authentic Brooklyn Pizza–I did some checking and took a look at www.worstpizza.com…I also checked-out Urbanspoon and Boca Raton Magazine and the “reviews” on these sites were good for this joint.

So it only goes to show, “different strokes for different folks.” Just maybe I caught an “off day”…but that’s the way this review game is played.

Alan, (the owner): For now, that’s the best I can do for you in the review department. Feel free to write- me and tell me what “i might be missing.”

jeff, this joint use to be called mario the baker’s. they couldn’t make it there so they sold to authentic pizza. i use the mailbox service at the other end of the center so i’m there almost every day. tried the pizza and found it lacks SAUCE. it literally has no taste. one other thing the booths are very hard. first time that i can recall where i had to move from a booth to a table because the bboth was hard on the back and rear.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks 4 stopping in, like u said different strokes 4 different folks, but I want 2 tell u that my main pizza guy Tony from Brooklyn is off on Saturday & Tuesday, u might like his pizza better. Also our grandmas pizza has fresh garlic & basil. If u r in the area give it a try again, our sandwiches r huge & delicious. We do not overly season anything, some customers ask us 2 make pizza well done or add oregano etc. but most like our pizza just the way it is!!!

When I did my review, it was when the originals Tony was working there and that guy makes some of the better pizza inhale tried done here. Tony and Alan parted ways and I am not sure where Tony is now.

The new Tony there, although a nice guy, doesn’t seem to make a tasty enough sauce. It needs some sweetening. Alan is a truly nice guy and hopefully he will be around for many years, but I miss the original Tonys pizza. So you cannot really go by my review here since the pie has definitely changed.

The nice thing about Alan is he is the type of owner to make a change to his pizza after reading reviews, which is something many other places are too proud to do!

I have had pizza here . Some of you guys are right the sauce has absolutely no taste. While I was eating my pizza I was actually wondering if there was any sauce at all it was bland.

boy did owner’s Alan’s review request backfire. not only didnt you like the pizza but worstpiza.com who had originally liked the pizza now writes and says that they agree with you that the pizza is now not all that good. sometimes you got to watch what you wish for.

I actually think this place deserves a 4.5, but I’m reserving my 5-star pizza rating for the best pizza EVER, so whoever rates this place next – do me a favor and give it a 5 to balance out my review.

Got the caramelized onion, tomato, and basil pizza. They have crust-making down to a perfected art form. It had just the right amount of crispiness at the bottom and was soft and flavorful throughout. This pizza was really, really good. I think my good pizza quest in Boca has come to an end cuz it would be really hard to trump this place. I will definitely be stopping by again soon.

I am really pissed off by the idiot that says this is not NY pizza! everyone has there wright too state there a opinion but when u tell me this is not NY pizza than u do not know what NY pizza is. Go to urban spoon there are real customers reviews, U jack ass. Yes Jeff the day u where here was an off day, I later tried the sauce & it was not a good batch, I invite Craig & Jeff & anyone, too come in 4 a free slice, except for the jack ass who said that it is not NY pizza. Most days are very busy here, because while I can not please everyone, I please most, my customers tell me I have the best pizza around. OFFER IS GOOD UNTIL Aug 1 2010

  9. jh says...

Alan, I see that you admit that the day Jeff tried your pizza that “I later tried the sauce & it was not a good batch.” That’s the way the cookie crumbles.
If a lawyer made a bad move on your behalf and you spent the night in jail but he told you that he could do better next time, would you still use him?
    Get the point.
Both Jeff and worstpizza made the same call on you. Apparently they both weren’t there the same day, so your claim that of an “off day” can’t be. Obviously you have OFF DAYS and not just one OFF DAY.

I know good pizza and yours isn’t good.

We order from Brooklyn pizza at least once a week. We think their pizza is great, love the thin crust and the flavor is great. We will continue to order from Brooklyn Pizza because its is one of Boca’s Best!

You want great real BROOKLYN pizza you go to Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn. This is what pizza is suppose to taste like, not the pizza that this Boca wannabe sells. http://www.difara.com

  12. JeffEats says...

Gorilla H.: Just had a chance to read your post.

I am very familar with Di Fara Pizza.

As you guys may or may not know, I was born in Brooklyn in 1949. Over the years that I lived in Brooklyn, I must have gotten pizza there at least 100 times maybe even more. Although I lived about 5 minutes away by car, one of my dearest friends in the whole world Jack Heed lived 2 blocks away from Di Fara’s store. Jack recently passed, but I have found memories of eating “tons” of slices with him at Di Fara.

Comparing Authentic Brooklyn Pizza with Di Fara would be like comparing a 9th grade class president with the president of the United States.

Di Fara is FAMOUS and is considered by many to be one of the best pizza joints in the United States.

    Thanks for reading…

  15. bobby j says...

Authentic Brooklyn or not…the pizza just isn’t good. With all of the competition in such close proximity, I thought this place might have something special. I was told that if I tried a pizza made by Tony, I would be “blown away”. Well needless to say, I did and I was not! Not even close! Tomasso’s is right across the parking lot and is always packed, but that’s just because they have a WAY better product and it’s worth the wait. I would even try APB again let alone wait in line for it but I don’t see lines being a problem for them anytime soon. Keeping the doors open, maybe, but not lines…

  16. LLL says...

booby j makes a good point.
i lived in brooklyn for over 40 years.
while there i had some pretty lousy pizza and chinese food.
i have eaten the pizza at authentic and it isn’t very good. the sauce is as bland and tasteless as can be. the crust isnt much better and isnt crispy.

to the idiots that say I am not going 2 stay in business just shows your are a.. h….s business is booming!!! at this point I am just trying 2 lash out at you rude a.. h….s who nasty & do not know what good is, if u r going 2 try too compare me 2 a place that u have eaten out all your life, I am never going 2 be able 2 compete with that, because u r so accustomed 2 the taste of di faros etc. I have been 2 di faras, I think there pizza is good, but far from the best, I am from Staten Island I am very a accustomed 2 eating Joe & Pats etc, my opinion which is just an opinion is that Staten Island has the best pizza, why is that, probably because I am so a a custom 2 eating pizza in SI, NY

  18. RAR says...

alan, you own this pizza place. so you are very biased to say the least, as you should be.
i have eaten your pizza. sorry pal, it isn’t too good.
i haven’t tried your other food.

    • alan says...

Why r u saying I am bias, I am showing real reviews from customers, I think Joe & Pats in Staten Island is some of the best pizza in the world, I am very fair & balanced! I respect your opinion, the only opinion I did not respect was when someone said it was not NY pizza, if u really want 2 get technical, real NY pizza can only be brick oven such as LombardiS the 1st pizzeria in US

  19. David L. says...

Alan, Keep up the good work. I’ll put my 2 sausage slices (not too hot) up against any pizza in S. Florida any day of the week. People like what they like, and there is no changing anyone’s mind if they don’t want to change it. Just know that those of us who keep coming back week after week do so for a reason.

    Thanks again,

  20. Bklyn Pizza Buff says...

OK..ok.. everyone is a pizza maven it seems like. Like many others, I grew up in Canarsie Bklyn from birth to age 42, then a bit in Queens (Howard Beach) & then the burbs for another couple of yrs. In all fairness to this joint here is my take. Pizza Hut, Papa Johns & the rest of this crap is just that as we know know matter how you look at it. But getting past these pizza chains that should be outlawed,, there is no truer statement than, “different strokes for different folks when it comes to real pizza. NOW.. for those that do not realize it, PIZZA IS THE MOST PERSONALIZED food that one can experience. A few yrs ago I finally came to terms realizing that their are some great pies out there but everyone likes a different style. Some like Oregeno & some do not. Some love fresh basil such as myself & some just hate it. Does that make a pizza suck, of course not. Most joints that know what they are doing are afraid to add too much seasoning for what should be the obvious. Some like more cheese than sauce & visa versa. Some like a softer dough (not sure why) & some like it crispy so it does not do the FLOP! You can always add some seasoning but you certainly can never TAKE IT OFF! Get the point??? I grew up on Domnicks pizza at Di Farra’s on Ave J. Between his joint & Patsy’s uptown where Frank Sin- – – -a used to have his pies flown in from when he was in Vegas, these are my two choices. Johns in the Village, Lombardi’s, Hyde Park on Cross Bay Blvd., Pepe’s in CT. with teir fresh clam pie, Umbertos Grandma style, L & B Spumoni Gardens which so many love but so many do not care for. If going with a typical NY pie & not including fresh Bufalo Moz, it all is based upon the cheese. No matter what others think, their is really only one superior commercial cheese & thats Grand’e. Then comes the sauce. This will take days to explain but to make it quick & short, San Marzano or San Marzano style whole tomato is the ticket. Any high quality canned tomato product is important to use & after tasting ABP’s Spumoni Gardens type pizza I can say that their sauce on this pie is excellent & full of flavor. Their regular cheese pizza I cannot say because I did not try it. I personally would drive the 25 miles that I did anytime for that L & B Spumoni type pizza. So light, airy & flavorful, topped with some nice olive oil. I used to be like most on here stating this sucks & that sucks but as long as it has a crisp bottom & is made with good to better ingredients, IT IS ALL A MATTER OF OPINION & TASTE. PERIOD! After moving from Bklyn to LI, I would drive to DiFara’s to bring my pie’s back to LI. But……….. now that Domick decided to charge 10.00 for two small cheese slices & 30.00 for a plain cheese pie… I am anti DiFara’s because no pizza is worth that to me. I find it insane to charge that & the old man is doing not because he has to but because he wants to. If it had some fresh Bufalo Mozz on it then I can justify it. I am a fan of DiFara’s from the late 70’s til now but again, cannot justify that 5.00 a slice routine. Here is another typical example of how personal pizza is. Most of us from up north including New Haven & the Boston area love that charred pizza crust such as Anthonys Coal fired pizza (cardboard) but many from other areas that recieved charred pizza…. well.. they would throw it back in ya face & say ‘This shit is burnt” I want my money back. I have seen this happen many times with people from other parts of the US & the rest of the universe. For someone to say that this ABP sucks, I think you are taking it a bit to far, just NOT to your liking. Like I said before, I did not taste their round pie but from the looks of it it is MOST DEFINATELY a NY style pie. If you state otherwise then someone up above this comment is correct.. YOU DON’T know shit about pizza. By the way I have an Italian Restaurant/Pizzeria in WPB & Jeff has been their & has given me a very good review but I am sorry,.. I think he missed a beat on this review unless… the pizza formula has since changed as I have just tried it a few days ago. Please remember, Us pizza fanatics have to be very careful as to how we season the pizza/sauce as many do not like to much seasoning or for that matter Oregeno.. at all. So just add a bit of seasoning top please ya palete! I can go on & on but,… whats the point. Now you can all have fun & rip me a new A–H— as you might say,, I do not know what the @#$%^ I am talking about after I have studied & worked on dough & sauce recipes all my life.
Final note: Enjoy your pizza wherever it & whatever it may be BUT,, do not be so fast as to say.. this sucks & that sucks.. it usually is just a matter of taste & opinion.

  21. karyn & Richard says...

How can anyone not give this an 8/8? This is the best pizza in the area… including Delray and Ft Lauderdale. Tony is the best… He is THE pizza man. The owner, Alan, is wonderful and tries to do it right by being fair to his customers. Trevor and Matt add a lot of class to the place– two gentlemen! But the food…. We’ve been there at least ten times in the last 2 months. Linguine with homemade clam sauce — yummmm. White pizza with roasted garlic, crumbled bacon, dried tomatoes, ricotta and mozorella cheese — to die for. This is like my Northern Italian Nona made years ago. Love the characters in their as well as the old world charm of the place. Whoever doesn’t like this place doesn’t know good pizza and Italian food or simply isn’t ITALIAN!!!

  24. Deanna and Autistic son says...

Our family loves Authentic Brooklyn Pizza. It’s just right, not to spicey, but just enought bite to make it delightful. Our son has autisum and won’t eat hardly anything. When we pull up to Authentic Brooklyn he can hardly wait. He bites the crust first then works his way through the slice, grinning with each bite of pepperoni. I don’t know for certain, but I think they use Mozzerella only. Meaning they don’t blend their cheese with cheaper cheese. I don’t see a waxy or extra greasy look to there pizza pie. Give them a try again. It could have been an odd day.
