John Bull English Pub (West Palm Beach)

Posted on January 24th, 2009 · American Irish West Palm Beach

*****  John Bull English Pub, 801 Village Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409 (561) 697-2855.

I recently had dinner at John Bull English Pub, an “English Pub” that actually breaks the mold…in that its food is absolutely delicious. I usually find, that these English (and for that matter Irish)  pub-joints have food that is borderline-horrendous. Thank God, these-British guys lost the Revolutionary War.  Anyway…at this stage of the review, take a look at John Bull’s website www.johnbullenglishpub.com for menu/prices…there is also a photo that will quickly sum up this joint’s dark-wood decor for you.

For sure, John Bull has some “English dishes” like fish & chips, bangers and mash and shepherds pie…but my “taste-test” drifted to stuff like, crabcakes, grilled pork chops, kobe beef sliders, philly cheesesteak sub, shrimp scampi, turkey pot-pie, french fries and onion rings. I got to tell you, somebody back there- in John Bull’s kitchen really knows how to cook, because the food is realy-really good. Prices are sports-bar prices (maybe a buck or two higher)…service is just fine. Your tee shirts/shorts ensemble works just fine here. By the way, the joint has live bands on Saturday nights and other “entertainment-stuff” going on during the week.

John Bull is a rare-find…like I said before, these type of joints usually don’t have great food, but John Bull absolutely-positively breaks the mold. The joint’s menu is packed with appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, meat/seafood/chicken entrees and desserts… I promise you, that you will not have to eat “English” food, unless you want to.

John Bull English Pub is open Monday-Friday 11:30am-2am and Saturday-Sunday 5pm-2am.

Thank God we had…George Washington!

    Hello again Jeff ~
After reading your review I kept John Bull in mind, and yesterday we took our West Palm Beach friends there for dinner. It is as you said. Three of the four dinners were very good. The ribs got an A+… tender, meaty and fall off the bone; The blackened ribeye tender and tasty but perhaps a tad overdone (the waitress never asked how the patron wanted it prepared) gets at least a B+, the chicken breasts with artichoke hearts, sundried tomato and a fantastic sauce that I enjoyed certainly got an A… the chicken was a little overdone but the sauce with it’s veggies and the sides more than made up for that. The loser was the “catch of the day” – talipia that was very overcooked and dry and not particularly well seasoned. My wife used tarter sauce rather than sending it back – a disappointment.

The only other bone we might pick is about the pub’s policies. We were 2 couples and each of us had coupons emailed to us for a buy one get one promotion good only for that day. I do admit that the coupon did clearly say one per table, but the restaurant was empty and the only way that we could have taken advantage of our coupons was to sit at separate tables. We enjoyed the meal but the management’s attitude regarding this issue spoiled what would otherwise have been an enjoyable evening. A little flexibility and customer comes first attitude would have gone a long way to having us return to John Bull…. after all, there are a lot of restaurants out there, and while John Bull was good, it wasn’t great!

So our quest for the perfect dinner continues.

Dinner last night at John Bull. Wife and I sat outside. I enjoyed my bbq ribs and she enjoyed grilled chicken. We were treated to 2 hours of rock n roll by Ryan & The Rockers. Very pleasant evening.
