Last Saturday night, I saw an absolutely terrific “singing” group in action…The Sensations-The Motown Philly Express.

This local South Florida group, lead by Frank Wilson and Ron Jonas is a 4-man group which will have you believing that The Temptations. The Four Tops and other Motown legends are in the house. The performance that I saw, featured fantastic vocals and terrific dance routines. The group also ‘covers’ groups like The Drifters, The Coasters, The Miracles, The Platters–just to name a few. They did a version of Smokey Robinson’s “Ooo Baby Baby” that was so dead on, that many in the crowd thought that the original recording was being played.

As I mentioned a few seconds ago, The Sensations- The Motown Philly Express is a local group. Sometimes they use tracks, other times they perform with a back-up band…every so often, the individual members (Frank Wilson, Ron Jonas, Mel Williams, Rob Cox) play local restaurants, clubs and country clubs. For example, Frank Wilson can be found most Thursday nights 9pm-1am at City Pub in Deerfield Beach.

Trust me on this one, the group that I saw last Saturday night had the crowd going nuts.

So…if this kind of music is your style—keep a close eye on newspaper ads…that’s the best way to keep track of the numerous appearances that these guys make.

If you like ’80′s’ music, you absolutely positively got to check out- On The Roxx–a local 5 piece South Florida band which is developing a huge following. Checkout www.ontheroxxband.com for schedule/videos.

Like I said before DYNAMITE…some of the best covers of Katrina And The Waves, Joan Jett, The Go Go’s, Rick Springfield that I have ever heard. The band has two terrific frontmen–Jack James and Diane DeNoble…they’ll have you believeing that the original artists are in the house.

Just so you know, over the next 3 months the band has 4- free-public appearances set to go…1 in Coconut Creek, 2 in Port Saint Lucie and 1 in West Palm Beach.

Do yourself a solid and catch them, you’ll have a great time.

Just curious, who do you guys think has “worse” customer service, Comcast or Sirius XM?

Maybe I’m crazy, but literally, every time I turn on my television there is a problem with the Comcast cable service. The latest “event’ was a total loss of cable last night around 9pm for over an hour. In addition, it was absolutely impossible to “call” Comcast as there was a recording to try later.

On the Sirius XM front, it seems that although they are a merged company, they don’t have merged business account records, so if one of your cars has XM and the other has Sirrus, you can’t just make one call to handle issues. In addition, after the “free” trial runs out on new cars, Sirius/XM tries to bang the customer with ridiculously high monthly rates, which if you are persistent can be negoiated down to virtually pennies a month.

Just curious what you guys think of these companies and their services.

Having eaten in- my fair share of Chinese Restaurants since my 1949 Brooklyn birth–I can unequivocally say, that I am an expert on pistachio ice cream.

If you want to eat an amazingly delicious pistachio ice cream–then you gotta try the one that Blue Bell Creameries makes. I get mine at Publix and it’s usually something like $6.98 for a 1/2 gallon. If you play your cards right, every so often, Publix runs a 2–1/2 gallons for $9.

***** THE BEATLES MEET THE ROLLING STONES *****

A reader, recently sent me the following email about an event scheduled to be held at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton.
—

Saturday, January 28 at 6:30 p.m.
Grande Ballroom
$59 Members Pre-Registration before January 21; $68 Members Thereafter; $81 Guests

Amazingly, as two of rock’s most iconic bands, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones never shared a bill during the height of their careers. Well, that all changes as national tribute acts Anthology and Roll The Stones take the Woodfield stage for an unforgettable night as these bands create the sounds, mood and vibe that started a cultural revolution! Members and guests begin the evening with a cocktail hour followed by dinner in the ballroom prior to Anthology taking the stage to play all your Fab Four favorites. Then, Roll The Stones will capture the power and excitement straight from the Rolling Stones legendary stadium tours during their set. A signature bar will be available.
*This event will feature assigned seating for everyone. Members may request seating arrangements and all requests will be considered and granted when possible, however, requests are not guaranteed. In the event that this event reaches sell-out capacity, all tables will consist of 12 people to maximize seating. Any group that is smaller than 12 will be seated at a “club table” in which Woodfield will put groups together to form a table of 12. There is a 72-hour cancellation policy for this event.
**Kids Korner will offer complimentary babysitting on this evening for those members attending this event

—

If you check past reviews, I have seen both Anthology (10/1/08—www.anthologytheband.com) and Roll The Stones (9/9/2011—www.rollthestones.com) in action and both groups are absolutely terrific. From the email, it seems that this event is only open to Woodfield Country Club members and their invited guests…trust me on this—if you like The Beatles/The Rolling Stones, see if you can “make” friends real fast with a Woodfield member and get yourself a ticket to this “party”…it will be like watching the real-guys in action in sunny Boca Raton, Florida.

Got a really cool company/site for you guys to check-out…OpenTable– www.opentable.com.

Now, I know that most of the joints that Jeff Eats frequents or shall we say peruses-wouldn’t know a “reservation” from a basketball, however, every now and then, one of these joints does require that you call-in-advance to make sure that when you get there-they have a table for you–what a novel idea!

To that end, you might like to check-out OpenTable. The Company’s site allows you to book reservations online. The site covers restaurants all over the United States, with a fair dosage of joints in South Florida. In addition to the booking of tables, there are coupons and deals…there are also loads of readers’ comments and other good stuff–that may point you in the right direction and end up with you eating some really good food.

***** Whole Foods Market, 1400 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 447-0000.

It just dawned on me, that although I have referenced Whole Foods Market in several “joint” writeups, I’ve never done a writeup on Whole Foods Market. Play along with me, because I seriously doubt that any of you guys don’t know what Whole Foods Market is all about…

The best way that “I” can describe Whole Foods Market is- a national chain of specialty supermarkets…that does an absolutely incredible job-of-marketing its products. The reason I make the “marketing” comment, because give or take a handful of items, Whole Foods’ prices are ridiculously HIGH…for example, a quart of fresh squeezed tangerine juice at Whole Foods $3.99, while a similar quart at Boy’s Market in Delray goes for $2.49. The folks behind Whole Foods Market are real smart—they successfully carved out a niche in the organic food/product business—and you do know, don’t you, that many Americans are really into this holistic/organic/healthy/climate control lifestyle. Personally, I still believe that hiding under my desk at PS 179 in Brooklyn/1955 was enough protection from a Russian nuclear attack.

Just so we are straight, every so often I buy stuff at Whole Foods Market. The primary reason, my local Publix doesn’t carry the item…that fresh tangerine juice is an example.

Let me leave you with this thought. When I was a kid, my parents would let me and my brother “look” at the toys at FAO Schwarz in Manhattan…they- then bought us “our” toys at Toy R Us or a local store in Brooklyn for much less. For sure, every so often FAO Schwarz had a unique toy here and there, but then again my parents weren’t buying me a $1,000 battery powered car to drive on the sidewalks of East Flatbush—for some perspective here, in 1955 (just to pick a year!) pizza was $.15 a slice, a gallon of gas ran $.26, a small coke went for a nickel and a haircut was 50 cents

Whole Foods Market is open 7 days a week 8am-10pm. You can check store deatils at www.wholefoodsmarket.com.

***** Krispy Kreme Donuts, 590 Northeast 167th Street, Miami, Florida 33162, (305) 949-6135.

As I’m sure- most of you know that Krispy Kreme Donuts is a “national-international” donut chain with stores in the United States and abroad. Really don’t have the time or inclination to go into detail, but the chain- which has been around since 1937 found its “growth” stunted a few years ago, when its management was caught-up in a public accounting/business scandal. Suffice it to say, many think (me included) that the new management, installed just a few short years ago, has turned Krispy Kreme Donuts’ business around. Now, I could be wrong here, but I think that Krispy Kreme’s stock currently selling at $6.39 (KKD) is an absolute steal. Do your on own DUE DILIGENCE. You can get details on Krispy Kreme at www.www.krispykreme.com.

As for Krispy’s donuts…a recent outing to a Miami location convinced me that its hot-glazed donut is one of the most delicious “things” known to mankind. To be perfectly honest with you, Dunkin’ Donuts’ coffee is better, but Krispy’s donuts are better. Just so you know, my taste test also included, cake and cinnamon twist donuts–also delicious.

For the record, I bought KKD yesterday. Like I said before, I think that “new” management has finally gotten a firm hand on this turnaround situation. I also like the fact, that huge foreign expansion plans appear to be in the works.

By the way, the Miami location listed above, is open 24/7.
