*** The Lovin’ Spoonful @ Mardi Gras Casino

Tomorrow night, Tuesday–May 14, 2013 at 8pm one of the 60’s legendary bands- THE LOVIN’ SPOONFUL- is going to be making an “out door” appearance at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach…tickets are $10, $15, $25. You can buy tickets online at www.mardigrascasinofl.com. By the way, ticketholders (special offer) can enjoy the casino’s French Quarter’s buffet $14.95 for $10.95. For those of you who haven’t been to the Mardi Gras Casino–it’s located at 831 North Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach…For more info give Mardi Gras Casino a call at (954) 924-3200.

You guys do- know that Jeff Eats is kinda like an “expert” on 50s-60s Rock N Roll…and I’m telling you that The Lovin’ Spoonful who had such mega hits as “Do You Believe In Magic” and “Summer In The City” were/and still are one of the greatest bands to ever grace a concert hall’s stage. Now for sure, legendary frontman John Sebastian is no longer with them…but the current lineup featuring original members/Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame members- Joe Butler and Steve Boone will definitely have the crowd “tripping” back in time…Jeff Eats recently saw “this” group and I am telling you, they are absolute dynamite.

If you are a fan of 60s Rock N Roll music, don’t pass-up the opportunity to see The Lovin’ Spoonful.

You do know that- The Spoonful and many of “us” aren’t getting any younger…

For you researchers out there…The Lovin’ Spoonful’s website www.lovinspoonful.com got all kinds of info/pictures/schedules/stuff- about the group.

Finally, in reviewing the Mardi Gras Casino’s website Jeff Eats notes–that prior to the concert (6pm-7pm) there will be a “60’s Costume Contest” with the winner taking home $1,000 and 2nd place catching $500–all contestants get $20 in Bonus Play (registration ended May 12th)—-sounds like the entire evening is going to be a retro-blast. Just so you know, a few years back Jeff Eats attended the Mardi Gras’ “70’s Disco Costume Contest” and had a great time watching the costumed contestants disco-dance to covers by The Shindigs Band.

Just a bet (pun intended)—tomorrow night is going to be awesome fun!

***** May 15, 2013 Update….

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats saw The Lovin’ Spoonful in action at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach…and I gotta tell you, the band put on a fabulous show.

For those of you who didn’t get there, this was an outdoor concert…seats were $10, $15, $25. Rather than going into minute-detail, this is basically a “first come” seating deal—some of the seats were on the lower level of the dog-track and others were in the grandstand. Jeff Eats’ cataract corrected eyes “told” him that there were about 800 people in the audience—and EVERY SEAT WAS GOOD.

The band took to the stage at 7:58pm and played for something like an hour/fifteen minutes. They played every one of their hits and also did covers of The Association’s “Never My Love”–The Byrds’ “Mr. Tamborine Man”–The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee”…despite the fact that original lead singer- John Sebastian is no longer with the group—original members Joe Butler and Steve Boone and “almost” original Jim Yester (the group started in 1965-he joined them in 1967) did exceptionally credible versions of the songs and had the crowd rock n rolling…the highlight of the evening was when the entire crowd -got to its feet as the band played “Do You Believe In Magic”….following the show, there was a “Meet & Greet” with the band–and I must tell you–the band members are some of the most engaging guys you’ll ever meet. They signed everything, literally answered every question and took countless pictures. The Mardi Gras’ staff did a great job–producing/running this event.

Jeff Eats and Mrs Jeff Eats “took” a look at the $10.95 special-discount buffet that was-offered to concert goers…We didn’t have “time” to try “it”—one of these days Jeff Eats will get you guys a review on the French Quarter’s buffet. I will tell you– Jeff Eats did see a number of concert-goers heading into the buffet right after the show ended. You wise-guys out there may right about now be saying… Hey Jeff, how did you know those heading into the buffet had been to the concert? To you, Jeff Eats says…because they were still wearing the purple wrist bands that they needed to get into the concert, so there!

Let me wrap this up…Terrific weather (in the low 70s), great seating, terrific band—a perfect night out.

Have you eaten in the buffet?
    Thanks, JH

    JH:

Just had a chance to read your comments.

    Enjoy the show.

Jeff Eats is trying to move things around and if I can I’ll be there.

As for the French Quarter’s buffet, it’s on my “to try” list.

    Thanks for reading…

    Hey Jeff,

It’s Len one of your neighbors. There are 4 of us going to the concert. We have the $25 seats. If you go, look for me.

  4. Two great groups a few weeks apart.
The Lovin’ Spoonful and The Rascals what could be better?
My wife and i are going to see The Rascals and we are going to buy tickets for The Lovin’ Spoonful.
The Mardi Gras has had some terrific local bands. We really enjoyed The Shindigs when they were there and also really liked Orange Sunshine and Viva Classic Rock N Roll Band.

    Jeff:
I took this off The Lovin’ Spoonful’s website:

In early 1965 as the “British invasion” dominated the American music scene, two rockers from Long Island, Steve Boone and Joe Butler, teamed up with two folkies from Greenwich Village, John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky, to form the Lovin’ Spoonful and go on to record and perform some of the songs that would dominate the charts and establish them among the greats of the mid-sixties era.

Combining the best of folk music and rock and roll, with a touch of country thrown in, they gave us such hits as “Do You Believe in Magic,” “Daydream,” “You Didn’t Have to be So Nice,” “Nashville Cats” and the anthem for a hot July evening, “Summer in the City.” All this in the span of 4 years and 5 albums. In addition to that they also wrote and performed two soundtrack albums for two directors very early in their careers, Woody Allen “Whats Up Tigerlily” and Francis Ford Coppola “You’re a Big Boy Now.”They toured almost constantly during this period and were one of the first rock bands to perform on college campuses almost as much as for teenage concert goers.

In 1967 Zal Yanovsky left the band to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jerry Yester, a member of the Modern Folk Quartet and friend of the band since its earliest days. All of the band’s energy was soon focused on recording their fourth album the very ambitious Everything Playing. It was the first attempt for a rock band to record an album on the new Ampex 16 track tape recorder and quite a challenge it was. It was worth the effort however, producing hits like “Darlin’ Be Home Soon,” “Six O-Clock” and “She’s Still A Mystery To Me” on the American charts and “Boredom” and “Money” in the UK and Europe.4

In June 1968 John Sebastian left the band to go solo and Joe, Steve and Jerry went back into the studio to record what would be their last hit single of the 1960’s, “Never Goin’ Back” with legendary Nashville session player Red Rhodes on pedal steel guitar. As 1969 approached the skies were darkening in Good Time Music land and sensing opportunities in individual endeavors the three remaining members went their separate ways with a promise to not let the spark go out.

In 1991 a long awaited settlement with their record company inspired Joe and Steve to contact Jerry and start up the Lovin’ Spoonful again. After a two month rehearsal in the Berkshire Mts., the group started touring anew, visiting over 150 cities and countries worldwide and reaching out to a whole new audience in addition to those that have enjoyed their music over the years. So look for them coming to your neighborhood bringing a brand new batch of Good Time Music. You can also click the concert info button for a calender of their future appearances.

March 6, 2000 marked a milestone for the band. They were officially inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

    • Joe C. says...

      Thanks for pulling that up.
I’m 64 and The Spoonful were one of my all time favorites.
Summer in The City and Do You Believe In Magic were anthems.
Graet to see the old rockers still working.
They make today’s music sound absurd.

    • JKU230 says...

I believe that Yester’s brother was the lead singer of The Association which was another great 60s band.

  6. Ed Michaels says...

    Jeff Eats:
You hit the nail on the head as you often do.
Many of us aren’t getting any younger. If we don’t see these bands now when will we see them? Most of the groups are our age if not older. Although its a Tuesday night and I got a business to run on Wednesday morning, I and my 60 year old wife will be there for the concert. Same goes for The Rascals.

  7. Manny Gold says...

    Jeff

You never fail to crack me and my wife up.
Just love your sense of humor.
That little BET-one caught our eyes this time.
Funny, if I went to this show as I normally dress I probably could win the costume contest without even trying. I’m wearing the same stuff today as I did 45 years ago.
The band was one of the greatest of all time.
They were one of the first to combine folk with rock.

    • Carl d says...

I was thinking the same thing about the clothing. Except mine are 10 inches bigger in the pants size and 4 inches bigger on the neck size.

  8. Bob F. says...

    Jeff,
Does the group lose anything without John Sebastian being on lead?

    • JeffEats says...

      Bob F.:

Just had a chance to read your comments.

No doubt about it, Sebastian is a great lead singer. Based on what I saw, Butler-Boone & Company will have the crowd eating out of their hands. They put on a great show and sound very close to the original recordings.

      Thanks for reading…

  9. Cal T says...

Personally I think that What A Day For A Daydream was the best Spoonful song.
    Great group.

  10. Stuuu65 says...

The Lovin’ Spoonful was one of the 1960’s greatest bands.

Every seat is perfect. It doesn’t matter where you sit.
Great venue for an outdoor concert.

Group was amazing singing Do Yo Believe In Magic.

    Great show.
For the next one, get The Grass Roots. They had tons of hits and put on a great show.

  14. AR says...

Saw them. They were very good. Brought back some great memories.
Ate in the buffet. It was good with a number of Italian dishes. Well worth the $10.95 price.
    Very nice evening.

  15. Len says...

    Hey Jeff, great show.
The casino did a beautiful job on this one.
    Loved the Meet & Greet.
Boone, Buitler and Yester very nice fellows.

  16. LOP11218 says...

    Jeff:
Their version of NEVER MY LOVE is as good as the current ASSOCIATION’s version and they had the hit.
The Lovin’ Spoonful put on one hell of a show. One of the most engaging groups I have ever seen.
    Glad I was there.

  17. Ronnie J. says...

If this show had been on a Friday or Saturday night there would have been 3,000 people there if not more.
My husband and I had great seats upstairs and loved every minute ofThe Lovin’ Spoonful.
As others have mentioned, we need more of these concerts.
By the way, won $53 on the slots.

  18. Ed Michaels says...

    Jeff
    LOVED THE CONCERT.
Some of the getups that people wore for the costume contest reminded me of Woodstock and Haight Ashbury and all of the cool things we lived through.
    Great fun.
Really hope the Mardi Gras does more 60s concerts.

  19. SY R says...

    Jeff,
Good seeing you at the concert.
The Lovin’ Spoonful is one of my favorite bands of all time. I love their songs and rank them up there with some of your favorites like The Rascals and The Grass Roots.
Eight of us first ate dinner at Matteo’s in Hallandale. Food was great. We then went to the casino where we had the $15 tickets. The view was perfect. As you know the band was terrific and put on a great show. After the show we met all of the members and Joe Butler and Steve Boone autographed some items for me.
All of us got new Players Club Cards and we played the slots for about an hour.
It was a really great night.
The venue is terrific for concerts.
I sure hope they do more of these concerts.
    Take Care,
    SY

Mardi Gras Casino did a great job with this one.
I usually play at Seminole in Coconut Creek but I decided to see the Lovin’ Spoonful and it was a great show.
Looking forward to more reasonably priced concerts.

  21. Shelly K. says...

    What a great night!
Beautiful weather, great concert, delicious buffet and my wife and I only lost $23.
Can’t wait to do it all again except for the losing part.
    The Lovin’ Spoonful were super.

  22. CCCFR says...

Jeff, heard from friends that The Lovin’ Spoonful put on a great show. Sorry I missed it. I do have 2 free tickets for The Rascals. They should be really good. From what I can tell there is a huge demand for 50s & 60s groups. The casinos would be smart and heavily book these bands.

  23. Ed & Lynn K says...

    Jeff Eats:

    Here’s how we see it.
My wife and aren’t big gamblers.
Over the past 5 few years, we have probably been to the Hard Rock 5 times, the Seminole 10 times, the Mardi Gras 2 times.
The reason for each visit was not really the gaming but the entertainment and food.
Last night we drove from Boca Raton to the Mardi Gras. It took 45 minutes down and 40 minutes back. We went to see The Lovin Spoonful. Before the concert we ate a light dinner in their cafe area. After the concert we played the slots for about 1/2 hour. It was a nice night out and the band was very good.
The point I’m trying to make is that if the various casinos would have enetrtainment priced right for our age group we are mid 60s my wife and I would come more often.

    • JeffEats says...

      Ed & Lynn K:

Just had a chance to read your comments.

They sure do make sense to me.

Got a good one for you…I’m hearing that THE GRASS ROOTS will be playing the Mardi Gras Casino on June 18, 2013.

So there you go…a shot to see another legendary 60s band.

      Thanks for reading…

Jeff, curious how do you know that The Grass Roots are going to be at Mardi Gras? I don’t see any adv anywhere.

    Thanks for reading…

    • Mk says...

      Thanks.
You are right http://www.the-grassroots.com shows the date. Looking forward to particulars on tickets etc. love this group.

    • Mark Rosen says...

Jeff, saw The Happy Together show at the Seminole Casino a few years ago, the Grass Roots were the opening band and they were terrific. As a matter of fact they were better than Gary Puckett and The Turtles who were also there. I highly recommend that fans of 1960’s Rock N Roll see The Grass Roots. They had a load of hit records and the current lineup sounds just like the hit records. I am definitely going to this one. Thanks for the heads up. Ive marked my calendar and will look for Mardi Gras advertising as soon as it is released.
      Thanks again,
      Mark Rosen

Caught The Lovin’ Spoonful on Tuesday night. They put on a great show. Also met Butler, Boone and Yester after the show. Nice fellows.
Mardi Gras did a very nice job in handling the meet & greet.
The Grass Roots were a major 60s group and had some great hits. Midnight Confessions is one of all time favorites.
Mardi Gras will have a packed house for The Grass Roots.
    Looking forward to seeing them.
Do you know what ticket prices are?

    • JeffEats says...

      Xman89:

Just had a chance to read your comments.

Jeff Eats has to agree with you, The Lovin’ Spoonful and Mardi Gras did a great job last Tuesday night.

As for ticket prices, not exactly sure- but I’m thinking same 10-15-25 structure that the Casino had for The Lovin’ Spoonful.

Just so you know, moments ago Mardi Gras announced on its website a 2013 Concert Schedule.

The suggestion here, follow http://www.mardigrascasinofl.com for info on The Grass Roots and the rest of 2013’s schedule.

      Thanks for reading…

        Thanks Jeff.
        Just looked at site.
In addition to Grass Roots, they are also having Jay & The Americans and The Association. I love all three of these groups and will definitely get tickets to see them.

The Lovin’ Spoonful’s show on a scale of 1-5 was around a 3. They were pleasant enough but the show was kind of boring for the first 30 minutes or so. I
