Gourmet on 11/25/10- some things bear retelling…

Let me make this one short and simple…

Applying the world-famous Jeff Eats’ “1959 Brooklyn-Jewish Chinese Taste-Test”—wonton soup, egg rolls, bbq ribs, roast pork fried rice, general tso’s chicken, beef with broccoli, mu shu pork…Jeff Eats has to tell you, that Gourmet Gourmet is one of the better Chinese takeout joints that I’ve encountered down here in sunny South Florida. Just so you know, the food was picked-up at the store and was eaten at a friend’s apartment about 5 minutes away…For those of you who like a pecking order, I thought that the mu shu pork and egg rolls were the best items, closely followed by the bbq ribs—the rest of the stuff “tied.”

Like I said a few seconds ago, Gourmet Gourmet is a TAKEOUT—so that precludes a ton of you readers from playing this “game.” For those of you who live or work in Gourmet’s neighborhood—this is a good joint to know about.

    GREAT CHINESE FOOD FROM SUBMARINE GALLEY

    I use the words “submarine galley” to emphasis the tightness of space in this incredible unadulterated Cantonese Chinese restaurant. You can dine. But, I don’t recommend it unless you want to spend time watching Juan do his magic with his woks. All hands are on deck as the phones ring off the hook for carryout orders. We happened to have David take our order of beef chow fun (dry style meaning no gravy) plus an order of their spicy seafood combo. David is the son-in-law of Juan the chef and David is originally from Honolulu’s Chinatown, HI. While waiting for our order we “shoot the bull and talk big story” about good” kau kau” joints of “808”.

    My normal SOP is not to eat my entire dinner and save half of it for the next day’s lunch. But those two dishes never made it to the next day. The chow fun included black bean which is the real McCoy for chow fun. And the spicy seafood combo was everything I would have wanted and then some.

    Like others who had mentioned, the parking and entrance for the restaurant is through the backside of the building. You can either sneak in through the Presidente’s parking lot or through the adjoining bank’s driveway. WARNING: front door on Flagler Street is permanently locked.

    Some may argue that the best Navy chow is to be had on a submarine. I know the Cantonese chow on this submarine which will never see ocean water is fantastic.
