***** New York Pickle Co., Festival Marketplace, 2900 West Sample Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33073, (954) 935-6019.

One of life’s simple pleasures…walking around the Festival Marketplace eating a sour pickle on a stick…don’t knock it till you’ve tried it…and it only costs 60 cents, 2 for a buck.

New York Pickle Co. is a “stand” located in the Festival Marketplace. The joint has been around for 18 years and has some of the most delicious sour–half sour–tomatoes–sauerkrat–peppers–olives in all of South Florida. The stuff is shipped in weekly from New York City and is sold from “old fashioned” barrels.

For you “old time” New Yooorkers…New York Pickle Co. is as close to Guss’ Pickles as you are gonna come. By the way, Guss’ which was around for close to 100 years (on the lower eastside) closed a few years ago.

Like I said before, one of life’s simple pleasures. Personally, I’d rather walk around a flea-market with a sour pickle on a stick than a cup of yogurt, any day of the week.

Trust me on this one—to paraphase Mikey’s brother…”Try it, you’ll like it.”

New York Pickle is open Monday-Friday 9:30am-5pm and Saturday-Sunday 9:30am-6pm.

These pickels are the best. There is no way to get anything close in south fla as far as I know. These are the legit full sour pickels. I buy a quart every now and again. The tomatoes and peppers are also very good.

By the way I like the new site design!

Is there a good sandwich place there to get something to go with the pickle? Next time I’m in the area I will stop there. Thanks Jeff for reminding me about this pickle emporium that I ate at years ago

rocking jack: Just had a chance to read your post.

Can’t think of a sandwich joint in the Festival Marketplace which deserves the honor of sharing a plate with these great pickles.

    Thanks for reading…

Just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your blog over the eyars. I love the new design. IMHO you are the only blogger out there who has any style. In many reviews you mention things that have nothing to do with food and are put in there to entertain, reminise and to make the reader think.
    Keep them coming.

There is a deli in the food court that isnt bad. There is a knish place in the food court that does a good job. Its hard to get a decent NY style knish in S Fla. Now somebody please tell me where I can get an authentic NY hot pretzel. I think I have to go to Ny for that. The best is a cold day and they hand you a red hot crunchy pretzel.

There are 2 great delis in the area. The Pomperdale on Commercial Blvd. and Pastrami Queen in Boca. The pickles will go perfect with every sandwich these guys make. On the knish story, the guy in the Flea MKT is good but Pastrami Queen has the best ones going.

I’ve been getting pickels at the Festival for years. They are as good as Guss’ and that’s saying a lot.

http://www.gusspickle.com/ Saw they still have a store in Cedarhurst, NY for anyone who goes up there. They probably do a ton of wholesale business.

  9. BB says...

robertw, cedarhurst is also the home of the WOODRO DELI which is one of the greats of all time. great food.

    • robertw says...

BB- I think I have been to the Woodrow deli many yrs ago. I do remember Ben’s from NY also. I have not been to Ben’s in Boca but the people here claim that its pretty good, but not as good as NY.

    • Jon G says...

Hewlett is the home of The Woodro not Cedarhurst

leave it to you to talk abot a 60cent sour pickle on a stick. that’s what makes jeff eats so unique. the other guys worry about what sauce was used and what color the linens are while you talk about important stuff like what to eat while walking in a flea market. love it. keep it comimg.

A good pickle is hard to find and so many down here have memories of great pickles “up north”. Funny how a pickle review gets so many responses here plus Jeff’s reviews are the best and he reviews just the right places! Jeff, could you please review Pomperdale? I rank it as good as pastrami queen for a great pastrami sandwich.

It’s hilarious how your Pastrami Queen review of Sep 22, 2009 has 52 responses and they still keep coming in. An older review has 87 responses

If you check, I reviewed the Pomperdale on June 18, 2008.

    Thanks for reading…

Jeff I’m very surprised at you review of this pickle place. IT”S not really that good!!! I asked for a full sour and they gave me a half sour. When I said this is not sour they told me that there is a shortage og cucumbers and that is why they only have half sour. What a crock!!!! Go to Sunrise Flea Market In the Back by the produce area is a stand that sells pickles shipped in from New York!!! EXCELLENT!!! It’s called N.Y. Dill They said they are opening one up in the Yellow Green Market in Hollywood. 1940 N. 30th Rd.

JG: Just had a chance to read your post.

What I know, is that when I’ve gotten pickles from this pickle joint, they have always been SOUR PICKLES.

      Thanks for reading…

    • Big Bruce says...

I have been going there for years, and, without a doubt, they have the best pickles! Not only in Florida, but as good as what you can get anywhere in NY. That is because they are shipped in twice a week from NY. Candidly, after reading your review, I did go to NY Dill in Sunrise and in my over sixty years of eating pickels, I can say they are not as good as NY Pickle.

I haven’t been there in years. I live in NM and can’t get any good pickles like that out here (closest is Claussen). Anyway, do you know if they ship their pickles? Thank you!

    Jeff,

NY PIckles are better than Ma Grunt’s in Detroit in the 50’s

    Try this –

    FESTIVAL BLOODY MARY

    1 Serving

    1 1/2 oz. Vodka

    2 oz. V-8 juice

½ – 1 oz. Brine from New York Pickle Co. (Old Dill)

    3/4 tsp. horseradish

    Dash of celery salt

Fill tall glass with ice and add ingredients and stir. Garnish with a celery stick.

we lived atop higrade bakery which was next door
to grunt’s grocery store. in back of grunt’s store
and the bakery were 5 or more pickle barrels.
grunt was our landlord and good friend. mrs. grunt would always give me sour pickle whenever I came into the store. age 7-10.
their sour pickles were to die for. do you know
    of anything similar?

As one of the remaining, living Grunt Grandchildren, I always enjoy comments to this day(!) about my Bubbie and Zaydie’s amazing Pickle Legacy! I am one of the few(!) who learned the fine art of of pickle making and still do so every year ( with the original family recipe at my home in Southern California) another ex-Detroiter enjoying Sunnier Climates! Thank you for the smiles!

Doing a project on my great-grandfather’s butcher shop in Detroit. This is a cool forum that popped up when typing in “Mrs. Grunts Pickles” into Google. Her shop was a couple stores down from his shop on 12th street

  19. Sid L. Turner says...

Love this pickle stand. Delicious everything.

    • lkrieger says...

Yes, delicious pickles but owners were rude both times we went here.

Pickles on a stick great idea for kids while shopping, but woman was very rude to my 10 year old daughter because she took two napkins instead of one at a time.

Not a friendly stand – so keep the pickles.
