Elbaum’s Gourmet Deli (Delray Beach)

Posted on May 31st, 2009 · American Breakfast Delicatessen Delray Beach

*****  Elbaum’s Gourmet Deli, 13800 Jog Road, Delray Beach, Florida 33484 (561) 921-0619.

Just a bit of history…a number of years ago, a  great looking 150-seat “bagel-deli” joint named Lox Around The Clock went through 2-different owners before closing…let’s be kind and say that lousy food and piss-poor service did the joint in. Well…about 3 weeks ago, Lox Around The Clock re-opened with a new name and new owner…Elbaum’s Gourmet Deli.

Last night, I ate dinner at Elbaum’s Gourmet Deli and I got-to-tell you, the food was very good, the service and  prices just right.

Elbaum’s is owned/operated by Bob Elbaum…for those who like to know stuff, Bob also owns 2-terrific Bageland “bagel-deli” joints, one in Tamarac and the other in Coral Springs (I’ll tell you about these joints in a future review).

Elbaum’s menu is packed with breakfast dishes, sandwiches, burgers, salads, meat/chicken/fish entrees. There are numerous breakfast-lunch “specials” and complete dinners run $11.99-$16.99…talk about “feeding you”…last night my broiled roumanian $16.99  steak dinner came with bread basket, pickle-health salad bowls, choice of soup/chop liver/salad, choice of 2-sides, dessert and beverage…my wife’s greek-style roasted chicken dinner ran $12.99.

Now about the food…my steak and her chicken were delicious…same goes for the chopped liver, salad, potato pancake and egg barley. I also sampled a couple of pieces of  pastrami-corned beef-brisket…and they were all very good. During my meal, I noticed a load of sandwiches and meat platters coming out of the kitchen…Elbaum’s definitely isn’t skimping on portions.

By now…You guys know the “usual”  South Florida “bagel-deli” game…loads of food, cheap prices, mediocre food.

Elbaum’s breaks the mold…the food is really good. Elbaum’s is open 7-days a week from 8am-8pm.

As an occasional (and disappointed) diner at the old Lox Around the Clock I can tell you that I am looking forward to checking this new joint out. You’ve never led me astray. Of course it will have to wait until after Labor Day when I return to Florida – the summers are just too hot and humid to deal with (and I’m spoiled rotten).

I live about 5 minutes away from the shopping center which has Elbaum’s. The center also has a Nino’s which is a terrific Italian restaurant. The center use to have an American style place called Lenny’s but like the original Lox it just didn’t make it although the food was quite good.

I really can’t say why Lox didn’t succeed as the food was decent enough and the prices fair. Maybe too much rent and too much other over head. Many of the people in this area are on fixed budgets, so maybe the recent crappy economy had a hand in things.

I have tried Elbaum’s for lunch and it is very good. Hopefully it makes it because the area needs a restaurant that serves this type of deli food.

flakowitz, 3 g’s, nestor’s. elbaum’s, too jay’s is the same type of restaurant. not the greatest food but nothing too terrible. these kinds of restaurants are for those who are budget conscious. you get a lot of food for the money. want to taste top deli meats then you do pastrami queen, ben’s, pomperdale. they serve top quality food but they get the price.

    decent enough food.
like someone else said like flakowitz, 3 gs, nestors.
    same kind of prices.
    tried elbaum’s for dinner.

  7. Hey Jeff: I am very familar with 3G’s in Delray,Flakowitz in Boynton, Nestor’s in Boca, Poppie’s in Delray and many others like these. I and some buddies had dinner at Elbaum’s. It’s okay, but can’t touch 3’Gs.
    just my humble opinion.

    Dear Jeff,
Just had lunch at Elbaum’s. My husband had a Leo (real reasonable with coupon), and I had a grilled cheese and bacon, with potato pancake which was delicious. Food was good, large portions, and certainly adequate for a neighborhood restauraant. However, the cashier and manager were grumpy, and inhospitable as could be. Gave the cashier the coupon, she cut out the appropriate portion, and did not return rest to us. Grudgingly gave back aft er asking for it 3 times. While lingering outside after we finished, a man came up and spoke to the manager. He said he had called to find out how late the restaurant was open for lunch, was told 3pm, arrived at 2pm, and was not let in. He ripped up a coupon he had, and said you’ve just lost some new customers. The manager didn’t appear to try to smooth over, or appease the gentleman, but seemed totally uncaring. I don’t think the restaurant will last long if this is the attitude of the employees (waiter was fine), and I hate to see it fold as it seems to be a good additiion to the area. I don’t know how to contact Bob Elbaum, and hope you can pass this on.
    Marilyn

Marilyn Siegel: Just had a chance to read your post.

Glad to see that you and your husband enjoyed your food and that it was fairly priced.

The rest of your “story” doesn’t sound…shall we say…too appetizing.

No question about it, employees make or break joints.

Hopefully, somebody in-charge reads your comments.

    Thanks for reading…

I agree with Marilyn above about grouchy hostess. We stopped in for breakfast on Sat 8/1. No greeting, friendly or otherwise. Was taken to the closest table (place was almost empty) When we asked for another table the hostess made a face. That was enough for me. While we stayed for breakfast ( no better or worse than most places), we won’t go back. If I am not made to feel welcome I won’t patronize an eating establishment. I won’t be surprised of Elbaums is gone by the end of the year

Went for breakfast today–overall was not a good experience. We had to send one dish back due to not being cooked as ordered and couldn’t get hash browns even though breakfast was still being served. We won’t go back. The place was empty–it will be surprising if it makes it due to the competition in the area.

The absolute worst bagels I have ever tasted. Would rather go to Einstein’s than Elbaum’s (never thought I would say that).

It is horrifying to read these comments, because we are going there for dinner tonight to meet up with some family members. We dined here when it first opened, and the food was what we expected, good basic bagel/deli/restaurant fare. We had many good meals at the former restaurant in that location, Lox Around the Clock, part of it was that it had the nicest people working there. There was plenty of staff and they were friendly. We hope Elbaum’s is not a horror and that they do what needs to be done to keep the restaurant desirable. There is no reason it shouldn’t be as busy as some of it’s local competitors if it does everything right. Good Luck Elbaum’s. We want you to stay open and feed us with a smile.

You old freakin people are to damn picky, you want everything for free and then don’t tip. we make a living on your cheap tips, Stay home..You think we should kiss your freakin butts, and you treat us like we are your slaves.. You are misable, and nasty. sometimes we just want to pour hot coffee on you..

  15. cara #2 says...

Right on cara you couldn’t be any more right you all have nasty attitudes and think you know it all

  16. cara #3 says...

I agree with you both. I’ve never met such arrogant, rude, and lets not forget cheap people like those in delray.people like that give a bad look on all the elderly folks in delray

Great place, great staff, great food

  18. marvin g. says...

let me help you folks out. elbaum’s is okay. decent enought breakfast-lunch-dinners. prices are reasonable. there are better and worse restaurants like this in florida. as i said before the food is ok, but nothing to get nuts over.
if you are looking for heavy duty delicious deli food the best is pastrami queen in boca. it runs circles around all the rest. if you are looking for the best reasonably priced kosher style place you got 3g’s.

  19. Doctor Cohen says...
